I have never sent photos out to a commercial lab. I have a Canon Pro-100 that I use for printing nice photos, matting them myself, etc.
I want to get my daughter something different for Christmas and thought of an aluminum print of a place they love, like Jekyl Island. Got some great shots there 24 pixel cameras
Anyone have experience in Aluminum Prints?
Thanks

I've gotten good results with Adorama Pix (now called Printique). I'd recommend the satin finish.

Costco does a good job on a budget, Bay photo offers more sizes and options.

I haven't tried aluminum, but I make my own metallic prints on my 13" x 19" printer and they have a bit of a unique look depending on the subject. If you are looking for something unique, you might want to try fractureme.com. They print directly on the back of glass laying down the colors first then white and protect the inks with a thick black foam board backing. It hangs directly on the wall with a wallboard screw. They stay pretty close the the srgb color space. The only issues to me are the reflection off the glass and they are not as bright as ink on bright white photo paper.

I've done a few on metal at MPIX.com. Really turned out well. Mostly now I get them printed on metal paper. You get that depth on that as well.

I have been very pleased with Shutterfly metal prints, usually aluminum. Completely ready to hang!

Has anyone been using them?

How do you make your own metallic prints? Special paper?

Yep. Epson Metallic Photo Paper Glossy. If the image has highlights, white or color, then you can see the metallic sheen through the light coats of ink. I am into birding and when there is a darker bird on a lighter green background (brighter tall grass or trees) that background really shines. It gets interesting when the image is of a white bird.

I like aluminum prints, I'm also a fan of Aluminyze one on the way right now. Good service and quality. I think you can snag 40% of first order.

I have used Magnachrome (magnachrome.com) in the Bay Area and really like them. The print comes back with a little "pop" to it but they don't just add saturation. They won't say what they do (trade secret) but I really like the result. I also think the prices are good and the service was really fast. If I want a metal print that's who I go to. I have done other well known suppliers but found the results unsatisfactory.

Since you can mat, you can also get very classy results at bay photo with fine art prints. Many paper choices and archival inkjet printing. And you have to learn how to pronounce giclee. With a quality custom frame the price might be about the same as metal. Of course metal can be framed also. It depends maybe where they would display it. To me unframed metal is nice in a casual family room/den where framed and matted would be for living room or dining room. Of course anything goes these days.

If on a budget Costco is a real bargain for metal 24 x 36 for $120.
