Look inside the lens cap, it will have a mm size printed on it (if Nikon lens cap) that is the size of the filter you need.

The camera body has nothing to do with the size filter you need nor does the focal length of the lens. The only thing that matters is the diameter of the front of the lens. USUALLY somewhere on the front of the lens (either around the front element) you'll find the focal length (the lens on my camera shows 67mm with a 0 with a line through it). It uses 67mm filters. If you're not sure what to look for, ask at a local camera shop or check online. I just looked at B&H Photo's website. Under Specs it listed 67mm as the filter size. Worst case scenario, ask here on the Hog. Make sure you include the manufacturer & focal length of the lens.

Different lenses require different size filters. I have several lenses that require four different filter sizes. On the positive side, all you need for digital photography is a CPL (Circular Polarizing filter) and in some cases a ND (Neutral Density) filter. A clear or UV filter is a waste of money, but many camera stores will try to sell you one to "protect your lens" because filters are high profit items. The lens protection argument is a fallacy, but is still a hotly debated issue.

To cut cost, you could buy filters for your largest lens and use adapter rings to allow you to use those filters on your smaller lenses.

Tell us what lens you're using, and we'll tell you the filter size.

I am glad that you finally figured it out. Cameras do not come but with one filter and that is the anti-aliasing filter on top of the sensor. Filters are used with lenses and as it has been already explained to you those filter sizes are describe in the lens itself.

All depends on what lens you have. They tell the size in mm on the front of the lens

The filter size has nothing to do with the camera body. Wow.

If you have the 18-55mm f3.5 - f5.6 kit lens, Tiffen lists the filter size as 55mm. Maybe you are cross threading it. Try again; it should screw in without resistance. If this isn't your lens, send me the full specs of the one you have, and I can find the correct filter size.
