I like the shot. Why is it all military bases look grungy? B&W expresses the mood exactly.

Military bases look grungy because they have specific missions and the missions require many facets to be functional.... They do not look like your prissy little towns or cities because the mission comes first. Of course looking at your photo with your lovely wife I take you've never been in the military.... Maybe you should join to you can live on a grungy base and appreciate all it gives....

When I enlisted during the Korean War, I spent about a week at Fort Devens until I was sent to basic training at Camp Pickett, VA. I don’t remember seeing this spot, but that was a long time ago.

I don't normally respond to this kind of post but:

Basic training and Advanced Infantry training--Heavy Weapons Infantry MOS 112, Ft. Ord CA August through November 1961. Jump School, Ft. Benning GA, December 1961 to January 1962. MOS then became 221.06, Infantry Airborne Qualified. Troup B 17th Cav, 101st Airborne Division (see photo). Re-enlisted, Ft. Bliss, TX HAWK, in case you don't know HAWK is the acronym for Homing All the Way Killer. We spent the next 2+ years living in 6 man squad tents 4 miles from the entrance to Everglades National Park with mosquitoes, rattlesnakes and an occasional alligator in a tomato field west of Homestead. D Battery 8th Missile Battalion, 15th Artillery.

There are two lessons to be learned from this little essay. First, be sure of your facts and two, try not to make a fool out of yourself in public.

I spent a few months at Ft. Devens in 1983. I can still hear the conductor on the T "Next stop AYAH!"

Great shot! I missed going to Devens for school by about 1 year and was sent to Ft. Huachuca (AZ) instead. From what some of my peers said, Ft. Huachuca in the winter was a much better place.

Yep, I arrived at Devens in January. There was snow on the ground until May.

Since you have been to Campbell, is it the Tennesseans or the Kentuckians who have the right leg short and the other the left leg short? I remember that the ridge runners have both legs short.

Re the buildings on a military base. All bases were built quickly to house a large numbers of trainees at a time. Logistics played a large part to decisions made. It was seldom a concern as to how long the facility would be kept after the particular crisis (war) was resolved. I think that it was after the Spanish-American war (1898) that various bases continued on their military existences beyond their projected time. Oddly, it can be said that the Cold War after WWII necessitated a more permanent housing of troops against future crises.

(I spent a couple of months in Boot Camp at Campbell in 1969. Heard the term "simulate" too many times.)

I worked at Fort Devens for many years. It was a pristine and orderly campus with beautiful landscaping on rolling hills, ponds, beautiful brick buildings and of course WWII wooden barracks buildings, two of which I worked in. On the river road, I would see fox and other wildlife. Since being transitioned to civilian enterprises, Fort Devens has lost its wonderful charm.
