I have both the D100 & D200. The D100 seems to have this problem more than the 200. It can be frustrating. I change to manual when it occurs. There was something in the manual, I believe, stating that needing contrast between the subject and background for the auto focus to function.

It refuses to auto focus and release the shutter. However, if I manually focus, it will and fire 9 times out of 10. I have tried cleaning the contacts both on the camera and assorted lenses, to no avail.
Although DX it continues to take excellent images, when it wants to.
I would hate to throw the body into the bin, but do I have any options - without spending heaps of $'s.
Your comments would be appreciated...

Bad news, you are now the proud owner of one of the most unique paper weights in existence.
Good news, it can easily be replaced

Go to the menu, save any custom settings, then reset to factory default, make sure ur batteries are able to charge fully...if possible decharge them first then recharge... or if poss, buy a brand new battery...then try....good luck...I’d suspect the battery above all others

Yes. Batteries fail too. Which is why I have 2 batteries for each of my cameras.

Only canon I know has balls coming out the end, but if it is anything like sony and others then factory resey
Many thanks to all who have offered good advice. I have tried all of the options given, without any luck, so the camera's days are numbered.
Of course, I can always resort to manual focusing ( the diopter is well tuned!).
All is not lost though, as I have another ageing camera - the mighty (heavy) D700. What with increasing age (pushing 80 now) and out of camera clubs, night driving etc., the 700 will see me out.. Thanks everyone.
Tony.
I've had the opportunity to repair hundreds of these, but to tell you the truth, They are beyond economical repair. It would run more than the value of the camera
They make a great paperweight, btw.
I loved my 200 I had a number of years ago. I traded it when I got a D300. I liked that even more, but both took fantastic pictures and beautiful color. There are many 300’s out there, also available for chump change. Maybe you could try one of those. Other than that you are gonna lighten yer wallet a good bit.
I have a D200 that got wet shooting a sailboat race and the LCD screen is dead. it shoots and focuses fine otherwise. I can give you a great deal on it if you can find a shop that could combine the two. I really liked that camera and would love to see it get a new life or be a donor to jump start another camera. I haven't turned it on in months. If you can find a shop and are interested i'll fire it up and take a few pics with it and makes sure it still works.
