Was asked to shoot some images for the local college's cosmetology department to use in portfolios for students. These are a couple of the shots.

First one is awesome and very well done in all respects.
2nd not so much, and the nails... yuck
3rd is good, but the nail work is lacking so I wouldn't use it to promote them w/o a little photo-shopping on the nails.

I am interested in improving my portraits and headshots so when I saw your photos I was naturally interested. There is a professional photographer here on UHH who I consider superior at this type of photography and I had him take a look at your work. He suggested "Had you considered the merit of using Paramount illumination in this scenario?" His question was directed only to help improve your work and not intended to tear down or be negative. The lighting he is talking about would be more flattering to the girls you photographed. Just an idea for you!

Don't know what that is. I am using Flashpoint 600 strobes for lighting. Further explanation would be helpful.

billnourse first my sincere appreciation for your decades of service in law enforcement... one of the most challenging fields and so vital to our society...

As to your thoughts on Paramount (butterfly) illumination? "...Further explanation would be helpful..."

I would like to be proactive here on your and the cosmetology students behalf...
My credentials? I hold a Cosmetology license in Makeup Artistry... and have decades of experience as a bridal makeup artist. Please accept my apologies for posting in your thread however only by showing you actual imagery would it be possible for you to truly appreciate the merits of paramount illumination.

I've selected a series from my commercial makeup artist's portfolio which showcase nail decor. In these examples paramount illumination using a 22" beauty dish with grid and sock was used. So you can grasp the transformation makeup can have on an individual I'm including (first image) the talent without makeup (a clean face) as she arrived on set. btw, in the first image no reflector below her face was used to eliminate shadows in the eye sockets... However in the other images a 30x40" foam core reflector was placed at breast height just out of frame. You can see this reflector in the catch lights in her eyes...

This lighting modifier is readily available for Flashpoint 600 strobes...
Here is a very cost effective example...

If that is beyond your budget then a reflected silver umbrella of similar diameter will do (typically under $20 ~ $30).

Hope this helps or is at least food for thought...
It is only provided as a learning tool not in anyway to be taken as a critique on your efforts..
btw, I will be on assignment for the next several days so forgive me if I don't respond to queries...

All the best on your journey billnourse

Very nice. I think the third one captures the essence of the project.

I have a 16" beauty dish with honeycomb and sock as well as silver umbrellas. Did not use them that day. Was using a barn door on a 7" cone. Did not use a reflector underneath. The main light was at about 45 degrees above right instead of directly in front.

As for critique, it is my opinion that the only way one improves is through arduous trial and error and through constructive criticism. Thank you for the tips and the explanation of this lighting technique. I have use it before, but had not heard it referred to as paramount or butterfly lighting. Our professor just referred to it as glamor or beauty light.
