I'm considering entering a couple of pictures in an exhibition at the Parker Reserve in Plum Island. I'm wondering if any of these have potential? I think i use more enthusiasm than skill. :-)

My quick reactions:
1. Blackbird: the nesting box distracts from the simple elegance of the bird; also, you might try to bring up the contrast in the bird--some shadow detail is lost.
2. Cool shot--you can almost smell the woods! Here again, I'd work to bring up the contrast on the subject, the critter.
3. Real cool shot and great composition. Would you care to guess what I'm going to say about contrast?

To my eye all shots are soft, not sharp focus on the main subject. Nice compositions but the focus should be sharp and bring in a little more light and contrast.

Enthusiasm is step one! Keep it up!

That has always been my biggest problem. But I'm getting better. I really have to concentrate on where that little red dot is. Needs to be on the eye of the subject.

Seems to me that in the bird one your focus is on the wood and because you've used a wide aperture (as evidenced by the bokeh) the wood is in focus but most of the bird is not - shallow depth of field. I imagine you couldn't get quick focus on the bird because of her dark colour and your "red spot.".

Everything about the bunny shot seems fine but composition-wise I'd be cropping so that there's more space that he's looking into (or moving into in other cases) than there is behind. Or photograph it that way! That will probably also dictate how much to crop from top and bottom to produce a pleasing composition.

The eagle needs more sunlight on his underside and this shot is probably always going to be a bit dull as a result. My thought is that it's better to show off shots that have the sun behind you and reasonably low in the sky, and the bird is better lit.

Finicky, eh?

You're on the way though.
Mike
