Greetings All!
Does anyone have any wisdom to share on how to go about shooting close up shots of individual snow flakes?
One name: Don Komarechka
http://www.donkom.ca/If you search for him or go to his website, you'll find everything you need to know.
Thank you.
I also checked out a youtube video.
Set focus close, aperture to f8, shutter speed to 250th-320th of a second, pan downward at speed and direction of falling snow. Then clear snow off lens and repeat until satisfactory shot is acquired.
Thank you!
Never thought of trying it this way!
I read a biography about him. The Snowflake Man by Duncan C. Blanchard . Very good book. I also have the book on his Snow Crystals. I tried some last year and they did not turn out well. Hopefully I can try again this year.
I would love to see that mueuem.
In my previous suggestion, "Set focus close, aperture to f8, shutter speed to 250th-320th of a second, pan downward at speed and direction of falling snow. Then clear snow off lens and repeat until satisfactory shot is acquired", I forgot to add...Set ISO to allow enough light for the shutterspeed selected. Snowy days are not often bright ones.
PS. remember a lens hood to protect the front element from being covered by snow and have appropriate lens tissues to clean the lens

IF I get lucky enough to get a gentle snowfall, I will have to give this a shot (omg that was horrible) with my new macro lens! Unfortunately, snow events here tend to be sideways and energetic. Hmmmm, maybe I can get into a sheltered area like some evergreens that will dissipate the wind?
