As the oil rises about 10 quarts a day ., at the Arizona Memorial ., the 500,000 gallons still onboard comes to the surface and actually reminds one of the tears of those entombed below ..

I can’t help getting a picture of those oil globs on every visit .., of course .., I added my artful spin ..

Of interest was something I didn’t know before , but on Saturday December 6 .., less than 24hrs before the attack , the Arizona took on board one million gallons of oil in preparation for her trip to the mainland , but December 7, 1941 ended those plans forever .., it is estimated that 500,000 gallons of the 1,ooo,ooo gallons went up in the explosions and fire , leaving behind approximately 500,000 gallons which at approximately 8-10 quarts a day leaking to the surface ... well .. you do the math ...

A cry from below .., we are still here ..

Very sad reminder. Did you know that the first one shot that was a private pilot? They didn't get him.

I would love to see the image before the P.P.
While I'M not a big fan of abstract: This image makes since to me, but only because of the story that goes with it.

You have to know I'd defend your decision to manipulate your image any way you choose, but like our estimable friend Mangle, I, too, would like to see a pre- or less- or differently-manipulated version of this shot. Not some other shot; THIS shot. I want to know its water, not digitally rippled ripples; I want to know its oil that's risen from beneath those hallowed swells.

Thanks for indulging us (me), Doc. Now seeing the SOOC version --which really does cry out for a little enhancement or (--egad!--) some manipulation--, what I find myself thinking is that this would be a killer candidate for the 'My Image Your View' thing-a-thon. But I digress....

Keep doing what you do. Your way. And disregard all us silly brain-dead re-re-revisionists. Especially when we're right.

Thought provoking post ... & a wonderful tribute to those that were lost that fateful day. Thanks for the thought & respect you've put into this.

I share your emotion but not your vision. But, hey...It's YOUR vision.

Well done! I never realized how much oil was left down there. Eventually the corrosion will cause the oil to be released en mass and cause an environmental disaster.

Did the math; about 429,000 gallons to go... Thanks for the shots and story.

They are predicting and ecological disaster when the rust finally opens it up .., they monitor it constantly with divers .. they have drafted a plan to eventually pull the oil out .., well most of it with some predicted spills ...but say this is many years away .

All attempts to do this has been offset as this is a grave site and can’t be touched ...

What a powerful image! The face and eyes in the oil glob really caught my eye. That should be in a military museum.
