These hawks are not as easily spooked as other hawks and are quite good-looking. Here is one captured at the Sacramento Nat'l Wildlife Refuge two days ago. It was really into preening its feathers after a bath, most likely in the small, steep-banked stream down below. The coloring indicates it is a juvenile.

Katy, this is one awesome set. A High Five for sure. Were you about the same height as the hawk?

Katey: I see you are in the Sacramento area too. My wife and I just took advantage of the free tundra swan tours lead by Ca Fish and Wildlife docents. It is on private rice fields near Marysville. Check out "swan tours" on wildlife.ca.gov - they run morning and afternoon tours on Saturdays.
We enjoyed the sandhill cranes at Woodbridge Reserve near Lodi too, but it didn't have the numbers of birds (tens of thousands!) that we saw in Yuba County. Best at sundown when the cranes are coming home from work. Enjoy!
