I did the upgrade to adobe 2020 the other day (photoshop 2020), now my 2020 upgrade is incredibly slow - example: white balance - switching from "as shot" to "auto" takes 30 to 60 seconds same with all other changes ... only happened after the upgrade. any ideas?

Man there are a lot of things. Did you restart the PC (laptop) after the install?
Just went through this with Adobe online support for LR. If you are using a graphics processor (Edit->Preferences->Performance) for enhanced performance, make sure you have the latest driver.
The only thing I have noticed so far with the new Photoshop is bringing a Raw photo from Bridge to Photoshop is slower than any version before on my super computer I use
every thing is slower since the upgrade here
everything here is slower and the start up alos I noticed right away I increased the amount of ram I had set for Photoshop to use from 70% to 85% and that helped a lot

I have noticed that also. The slowdown per function isn't that much but it adds up.

After upgrading the crop toll was almost impossible to use. I have been talking yes talking to Adobe support for hours over at least four separate phone calls. My case has been upgraded to a special team. Next conversation is this coming Monday.
I just today (finally) upgraded to PS v 21.0.1. I feared the worst, after reading this thread. However, what I have tried has worked fine. White balance changes in Camera Raw happened immediately. The crop tool worked fine (though the edges looked a bit different). My computer is at least 10 years old, a Dell Precision M6400 laptop. I suspect its specs are nothing special: (1) running Win 7 Pro (about to be a problem) Service Pack 1, (2) Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T9600 @2.8 GHz, (3) 8-GB RAM and (4) 64-bit operating system. I realize that this doesn't help those who have had problems, but I thought I would report that (so far) I have no problems.
Update to my previous posting .Yesterday I installed windows 10 1909 version on a new SSD . I installed only Adobe Products after doing all the windows updates . This morning I wanted to see if Raw Photos would load faster from Bridge to Photoshop 21 than they do on my normally used windows 10 version , they loaded much faster . That tells me as a computer tech . I need to investigate what is causing the slow down on the other drive . It could be I am not running the latest windows 10 version , other programs on drive causing a small conflict with the new Photoshop and Bridge , etc .
