So, I just went on adorama.com and purchased a 50mm f/1.8G for my Christmas present this year "from" my husband lol. I am so excited. I don't know if I will be able to wait until Christmas Day to use it. I absolutely have grown to love my 35mm f/1.8g. I used that lens on my photo shoot of my boys and it was great. In the past I struggled with that lens (user error) but now I love it. Can't wait to try out the 50mm. Next on my list will be the 85mm f/1.8. It is a bit pricier though so it may be quite some time before I can afford that one. A girl can dream lol.

It seems that you have a cropped sensor camera and with that camera your 50mm f1.8 will give you a field of view of a 75mm lens used with a full frame camera. It will make an excellent portrait lens.

Yes. I have a Nikon D3300. I can't wait to start shooting with my new lens.

Here is an article on 85mm lenses.

More for full-frame, but still pretty interesting.
One of my favorite lengths.
I just sold an older here, but it was an older model that wouldn't autofocus on your camera.
They can be found used...

Great to see someone else who uses primes. I have a number of vintage Pentax primes. A have f/1.4, f/1.7, f/1.8, f/2 50mm and 55mm lenses. But it would be cool to have a really fast 35mm like yours as well. Most of my lenses are f/2.8 or f/3.5, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, [50mms], 135mm primes, plus a few slower ones, and many zooms. I'm missing the 75mm to 85mm range in a prime.

A close friend of mine just bought a Nikon micro-Nikkor 60mm AF FX lens. He seemed to prefer it to the 55mm or 105mm for his D750.

I'm not opposed to used or refurbished. My camera I actually bout refurbished. It will be a while before I can afford it though.aybe that will be my Christmas present next year lol. that great bokeh in that article would totally make it worth the cost.

The 35mm f/1.8 is under 200 and can be had for around 130 or so used or refurbished. It is a great little lens. Works awesome for portraits and landscape. Of course that is Nikon pricing. I have no idea on pentax. I currently have the two kit lenses I got with my camera and my 35. The kit lenses are 18-55 and 55-200. They cover my zooms for when I might need a little more or less reach without the ability to move much. But recently I find myself exclusively using my 35.

Lol, yes he does great lol. I pick it out, buy it, and wrap it. Then I put from him on it and put it under the tree. It works for us. And I always know I'm getting exactly what I want. Last year I got a diffuser/reflector. Basically, I use Christmas as an excuse to buy more gear.

Christmas GAS. It's a common ailment. However please let me say that I am impressed. In our "convenience-store" society, most folks I talk with are looking for zooms because they are "less work, composition wise.". IMHO, you will probably learn the craft much better and make more detailed images by "hanging with the Primes." Merry Christmas and best of luck.

Prime lenses are great. When you get ready to purchase an 85mm, check out Tamron's SP series prime lenses. The reason is they all have stabilization except the 35mm f/1.4 (the f/1.8 version does have VC). I'm not trying to say that anything is wrong with your purchase. It's great. If you hand hold the camera a lot, the vibration compensation in the Tamron primes can help. I have their 45mm f/1.8 SP VC lens that I use on my D7000, D500, and D750. I did this shot at 1/30 second hand held.

If you can dream it, you can buy it.
