I have a Canon 5D Mark III now and I need to upgrade to CS6 if I want to be able to open up my RAW files using Photoshop.
I would like to know how Lightroom works in conjunction with Photoshop? Can I use it without Photoshop? What are the differences?
I have an opportunity to buy both really cheap. I just don't know if I should get both.
Thanks for your help!!!

Your stating "upgrade to CS6" implies that you have an earlier version of PS. If that is the case, you only need to update Camera RAW to be able to open the RAW files from your new camera.

If you are upgrading to CS6 because you want to use newer features, go for it. If it's just to open the RAW files from a new camera, go to http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5391 if you have windows or http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5390 if you have a mac. In either case, it will update Camera RAW for your older version of PS to read the files from your new camera.

I have CS5, but Camera Raw 7.1 is only compatible with CS6. Adobe does this to make more money. I believe you are mistaken.

You are only half right. I gave you the incorrect URL (for 7.1 rather than 6.7). Camera Raw 6.7 works with CS5 and includes support for your 5D Mark III and is available as a download for CS5

Thanks for the followup. This will save me some money.
Can I use Lightroom 4 with this setup?
I appreciate you not abandoning me very much...

Yes. I've used LR4 with both CS5 and CS6, and it works well with either.

Thank you very much!
I'll pick up LR4 after work. After playing with it awhile I'll let you know how it goes...
It's folks like you that restore my faith in humanity. :-)
Peace...Robert!

Alas, my memory is excellent, but the retrieval system isn't. I believe LR4 requires 64bit Windows, whereas LR3 works with 32bit Windows. Assuming my memory is correct, make sure your system is operating with 64bit, if you want to use LR4. :)

Thank you, but I'm on a MAC. I bought LR4 yesterday but haven't installed it yet!

I did the Camera Raw 6.7 download yesterday right after work. I'm back in business with CS5. If you hadn't made me aware of the update I would never have known. I use a Whibal card to get the proper color renditions throughout a photo session using the same light. In order to use it to the fullest advantage I have to use Camera Raw in Photoshop.

You are the man!!! Thank's again!

When I downloaded LR4, I seem to remember having to choose between 32 and 64bit. I'm running 32bit and did not have any problems downloading.
