La Couronne was founded in 1345 and is the oldest inn in France. Located in Rouen, the capital city of the French region of Normandy, it is situated in the historic city center. The primary dining room one the 1st floor contains many paintings of personalities who have dined there. In 1948, the restaurant served Julia Child her first French meal, which is said to have inspired her to devote her life to promoting French Cooking.
My wife and I were fortunate to dine on the first floor.
Thank you, marsdad, for sharing your photos at La Couronne in Rouen, FR.
We were there a 4 years ago but not as lucky as you. Just got a peek of the inside of the historic restaurant.
Allow me to add an FYI of Julia Childs' and her husband's first meal at La Couronne in 1948:
For starter: a half-dozen oysters on the half-shell served with rounds of pain de seigle, a pale rye bread, with a spread of unsalted butter (Beurre d’Isigny)
- Salade verte laced with a lightly acidic vinaigrette
- Main course: “Sole Meuniere.” Julia described that each bite was, “a morsel of perfection.” This was the dish that made Julia Child fall in love with French cuisine.
- A bottle of Pouilly Fume, a crisp white wine from Loire Valley
- Dessert: Fromage blanc, and ended with a strong, dark café filtre.
She described her first meal at La Couronne as, “I experienced fish, and a dining experience, of a higher order than any I’d ever had before.”
• Julia returned to La Couronne several times throughout her life.
I supposed you also visited the historic St. Joan of Arch Church across the street which was also the site where she was burned at stake.
Thanks again for sharing.
