Strange Insect - Face Frontal View

This is a face-on view of the strange insect from Bill. I posted a side view earlier today and this one provides details not seen in that view.

Again, this is a focus stacked image taken with the same lens, lighting and setting arrangement as the earlier side view earlier.

Thanks in advance for viewing and for your comments, suggestions, questions and critique.

Looks like something from Men In Black.
This is a female Scorpionfly. Probably Panorpa isolata. Mostly because this is the one in this area(Maryland).
The tail on the male has a non stinging organ at tail tip that resembles a scorpion sting.
They are found in low, damp areas amongst low growing succulent herbage.

Bill, this is an excellent specimen and one that I have yet to see myself so thanks for providing it. At first blush, it reminds me of a horse's head with its long snout.

I really try to do them justice and I hope that you are pleased with the way these are turning out.

Great image! Reminds me of a seahorse!

You can find them in woods, sitting on low vegetation. Generally pretty common where they occur.

Mark, because you live in the land of ice and snow, I'm hoping that you will be able to post a 'Snow Scorpionfly' this year for I'd really like to see one.

Interesting composition and light. Doesn't look as though there was enough focus stacking.

Jeff, thanks for viewing and you're correct. I created a "short stack" for this view which I do for most front on and oblique angle views compared to side views.

I keep them short of fully infocus due to the distance my lens setup has to travel which is 15-microns per move with lenses and 8-microns when I use microscope objectives.

I use "flat depth of field" lens combinations so there is only a flat slice for each shot. Attached is a single image from one of my stacks. If you look closely you will see that only a single hair is in focus which is why my stacks number hundreds of images in size as the camera marches forward. I never get to see the entire subject in focus until it's processed and many times they turn out to be a dud so there goes most of my day.

I shoot in TIFF so the stack of images averages 50-plus Gig in size so transferring and processing takes quite a bit of time. The average time to process a stack with Zerene Stacker takes nearly 4-hours of computer time with a Core-7 processor and 16-Gig of RAM on my gaming computer.
