A long time ago on an island far, far away.

Here are a few shots taken at the Kodak Hula Show which was held at Kapiolani park, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, U.S.A.. The year was 1960. These photos were taken with my Kodak Ektra (Hopefully the Leica killer) camera. I think I was using the 135mm f3.5 lens. The film was most likely Kodachrome ISO 10. The Ektra was a beautiful piece of work, but difficult to get used to. The best lens was the 35mm. It was the best 35mm camera ever produced in the U.S.

Spent three years at Hickam AFB in early to mid 60’s. These shows were very popular in those days. Hopefully, they remain so. Enjoyed the shots.

Thanks! They were still doing those when I got there in 78. Stopped shortly afterwards.

Dean I was a tech-rep for link, assigned to the Hawaii Air Guard at Hickam to assist them with their F-102 simulator. Was there from 60-62. What a great time to be in Hawaii, as it was still uncrowded and one could still park on Kalakaua Ave. in Waikiki. We lived on the side of Diamond Head at 3209 Collins.

So correct Streets! We lived in Waipahu, Henokea St first two yrs, then moved on base last yr. Son born at Trippler. Ironically, my nxt asgmt was W-P near Dayton, Ohio, and my street on base housing was Hickam Ave!

Nice nostalgic images, Ron.

I just read an article on the Kodak Ektra and am amazed at the features the Ektra had for its time. The mid-roll interchangeable backs should have made that camera very popular for serious photographers.

I was stationed at Hickam AFB from 1965 to 1968. We lived in Honolulu for the first year and a half in an old WWII era apartment building that was infested with cockroaches. Then we moved to Waipahu for the last year and a half. I don't remember the street, it was a long time ago. We lived in a new apartment building. We were the first tenants. Nice thing about that apartment was it was roach-free. While we there one roach flew into our apartment. I had to hurry and dispatch him quickly before he could tell his buddies about a new place to infest.

Yeah, Ed, all kinds of critters there. Very mild winters not enough to kill off undesirable ones. We lived two blocks off the beach for abt a month while looking for housing, and what I remember so well were the awful slugs, some were HUGE. Didn’t care for those things crawling around, especially after a rain.
