Greetings all;

I've been using Lightroom for some time with raw files saved on a separate/portable 5TB HDD. Having recently installed a new internal 10TB HDD, I'd like to move my raw files to that location.

I am however concerned that if I have to re-import everything from into the new location, I may lose edits I've saved over the years.

Am I making up a problem that doesn't exist? If this is a problem, is there a solution?

Thanks all,

Richard Baker

This is my second reply after re-reading your question. It's unclear to me if you changed out your c drive or if you added an internal drive.

If you change out your c drive Lightroom already recognizes it at all you have to do is drag and drop the files from the external drive to the internal drive with in Lightroom.

If you added an internal drive the first thing you do is you must add that drive to Lightroom in the folders panel on the left side, and then drag and drop the files from the external drive to the added drive.

Do nothing outside of Lightroom that is not the preferred way and you could lose stuff do all your moving with in Lightroom the link below shows how to do it and explains it with pictures.

Good luck.

Once you have transferred all your data and then have presumably added many more images, will you have another 10TB drive as your backup to protect against failure if your current 10TB fails? You'll still have your original 5TB around, but how do you plan to protect your future photos?

My suggestion: Back up new photos to a second EHD (at least 5TB) after you've loaded them onto the 10.

Best,

Jeff

Especially if the 10 TB drive is a "bargain" or consumer oriented drive - which typically just make it to the end of their warranty or slightly longer. I always advise people to buy enterprise or data center drives - all of which come with 5 yr warranties.

I've successfully done what you propose. I assume, when you say move raw files, that you're also moving any JPG, TIF, etc. Here's some ways to do it: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-549917-1.html. As I noted at the end of the post, I used method #3.

It's much easier to simply copy all the files from one HD to another completely external to LR. Just keep the same folder names and drive assignment when connecting the new equipment to your computer. LR will never know the difference.

Yes chG_canon
I agree, but I think also when he reopens the catalog and the old hard drive is not connected it will not find or see the files but then you just tell it, LR, where they’re stored, and Lightroom will now start looking at the new location. Is that correct?

Just drag everything on the old drive to the new drive in one feel swoop. Then turn off the old drive. Fire up LR. It will ask you where all the files went. Just aim it at the new drive. The new drive can have any name you want but don’t name it the same as the old drive. That is a road to confusion.

You can move them from LR or outside of LR. But just make sure you keep the folder names exactly the same and don't wipe or format the old drive until you are completely satisfied.

I work on a Mac, which seems to have a difference when it comes to external drives. On a Mac I'd simply link up the new drive, most likely by creating a new folder and placing it on the drive (with nothing in it) as this would connect the new drive to LR. Then I'd just do a drag and drop to the new drive. Nothing to link up after as LR would keep track of it internally as the items were moved. I do keep all of my image folders in one main folder so I would only have to grab the main folder and everything would be moved with that one action. I would remember to delete the empty folder I had created so as not to create future confusion. You might also consider leaving everything as is and just start to use the new drive for future images, that is if the drive is still good. Consider your long term plan prior to taking any action. It is easy to use multiple drives on LR.

Unclear which OS you are using. Also unclear is if the 10TB is an additional drive, or the C drive.

For Windows, and assuming your 10TB drive is in addition to your C drive:
1. Use Teracopy with verify turned on to copy files from old to new drive. Advantage of Teracopy is it displays what it's doing, won't hang, and can verify each file copied.

2. Use Windows Disk Management (as administrator) to reassign drive letters. Right click My Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management. In the Computer Management window, right click the desired drive, then select Change Drive Letter and Paths.

Reassign old 5TB drive first to free up its drive letter, then do the new drive. I add the drive letter to the volume name (properties) to make it easier to reassign if Windows changes the drive letter (occasionally happens on a reboot).

Now LR should see the new as the old, and easy to recover if it doesn't.

If it's a new C drive, I'd partition it first into separate partitions, one for the OS, one for data (Google how to). Allows you to, worst case, to reinstall OS without disturbing data. Also helps with backups (Macrium Reflect free works for me, though I also have the paid version for the incremental capability).
