In using the combination of Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II & LUMIX G LEICA 100-400mm F4.0-6.3 lens, would I use the image stabilization in the camera, the lens or both?

While I don't have that particular lens,
I do use various mixes of Olympus and
Lumix. Have you confirmed that your
intended combination offers dual IS ?

I have only the OM-D5II and Pen-F for
Olympus bodies, and using various OS
Lumix lenses there is only an either-or
choice for IS ... lens or body, no dual.
Perhaps your M1II body can provide
dual IS ? If you haven't checked out
the menu choices with that particular
lens mounted, best to check on it :-)

====================

If dual IS is not possible, I'd expect a
long lens like that to have better IS for
its extreme FL than the multi-purpose
IS in the camera body.

If dual IS is possible with your gear, I
would enable it. I use dual IS with all
my Lumix Power OIS lenses on Lumix
bodies and it's really better than either
of the single IS modes [body OR lens].

You're correct--I'm not sure that dual is an option, as it is with OLY lenses. I'll check.

If not, would you recommend lens or camera IS?

I'd expect a super-tele has specific in-lens
IS thaz much better matched to its long FL
compared to the general purpose IS in the
camera. I have no evidence or documents
to support that, but it certainly seems like
a reasonable expectation.

Found this:

https://naturalexposures.com/olympus-om-d-em-1-mark-ll-leica-100-400mm/

Here's the cogent statement from article ... actually
from the blog discussion that follows the article:

Quote:
From what I’ve been told and based on the tests
I ran, it’s best to shut off the Olympus in camera
image stabilization. You want to leave the lens IS
ON. If you do switch the lens IS off AND leave the
camera IS on, then the camera IS takes over.
However, with long telephoto lenses, Image
Stabilization is more effective in the lens.

There's some blog discussion following the article itself
that mentions problems with the Lumix 100-300 if both
the camera and lens IS are both enabled. It should be
noted that the Lumix 100-300 uses Mega OIS, which is
not compatible with dual IS. Power OIS is compatible for
for dual IS ... with Lumix bodies. Panasonic does not say
anything about Olympus bodies.

===============================

I'm not likely to acquire an Olympus ranked above my
OMD5-II ... cuz I already use a Lumix G9 :-) The only
reason I have a 5-II is cuz it was an Open Box Special
along with the 14-150, and I had "Reward Points" that
were expiring. It's a very likable [even lovable?] verrry
compact all-weather all-purpose body & lens. At $500
in "Monopoly Money" I couldn't resist. That outfit just
follows me around like puppy !

You may want to wait until next year. Olympus will be selling their 150-400 f4.5 with built-in 1.25 teleconverter (188-500 f5.6 with teleconverter). Then you will be able to have dual IS. It will still be handholdable even when using the Olympus 2X teleconverter (375-1000 f11, 750-2000 f11 in 35mm terms). With the Olympus body and the Leica 100-400 lens, only one, either IBIS or ILIS, can be used. By using just the IBIS in the Olympus body, it is still 6.5 stops IBIS and still an excellent combination.
