I grew Bidens cernua from seed a few years back. I had lots of success with germination, so I potted them and they bloomed like crazy. Then I planted them in the ground at the end of summer. I was so proud of myself and bragged to a botanist I know. "Uh, Mike. Bidens species are annuals." Oops! Since then I haven't done anything to keep it going, but every now and then one will emerge and bloom.

My totally unscientific hunch is that since annuals complete their life cycle in one season, they have to be prolific nectar and pollen producers. They can't afford a bad year! That might be why they are so popular with pollinator insects. I have a lot of the annual Jewelweed that self seeds every year here and it is a big hit with the hummingbirds and bees.

Bidens pilosa is an alien everywhere in the US, and I understand that it is aggressive and can become a problem. That "tickseed" reference in the common names of different plants refers to the size and shape of the seed, and also to the "stickiness" of the seeds. There are little barbs on the seeds that cause them to stick to clothing and fur.

Thanks so much for the wealth of information, Mike! I'm going to have to do a search on Bidens cernua, and you're so right about the Bidens pilosa. It grows in many places by the roadside, and the people who maintain the pitcher plant bog evidently are trying to keep it from overtaking the bog, because they use a mower on it before it has chance to seed. I don't think I'll be planting it in my yard.

These two species are more common in the South, and are pretty showy.

Bidens coronata

"Swamp Marigold" sounds a lot better than "Beggar ticks!"

Those two occur up here, too. Maybe I will give them a try. They like it wet.

Oh yes! These are also in bloom at the bog, and together with the tall sunflowers, they really put on a show in late summer and early fall, Mike. And I see they have much better manners than their cousins. Swamp marigold also sounds better than what my grandmother called beggar ticks..."gofetchums". lol

Thank you so much, Janos, and I'm glad you enjoyed them. I'm afraid the bog is done for this season, Janos. We too had our first freeze last night.

...from Weeks Bay pitcher plant bog. Also an 'update' about Earl to let everyone know that I have no update and am not holding back info as to his status. I've tried contacting Earl's friend twice and still have not received an answer to my email. I'm still hoping that 'no news is good news'. 😟
Please try the downloads on these for better clarity. Canon 70-200.

Donna, DDLs are great and the set is fantastic.

These are all beautiful, Donna. But the last one is a showstopper in my book. I love your buttery, wonderful bokeh!
