Just a hypothetical: if you were to buy a bridge camera solely based on stills image quality (not concerned with video), which would you choose?

I'm a Sony fan boy so view my statements with that understanding. I have thousands tied up in Sony interchangeable lens mirrorless yet my most used camera is a Sony DSC HX 80 bridge camera that I drop in my shirt pocket so It's always with me. I bought it used from a UHH'er. It's full frame focal length equivalent is 24mm-720mm
Beyond 600 mm equiv it starts to go a little soft although tests on a solid tripod at 720 mm reveal sharpness equivalent to the best film cameras of 20 years ago. It's small size and mass makes it difficult to hand hold at extreme telephoto settings though , even with IBIS.
Your question was about stills image quality though so here's an example at 24mm equiv. (wild flowers) and another at 720 mm (Pelicans -HDR composite of three exposures with in- camera exposure bracket braced on concrete wall)

And twice what you'd like to spend.

I have had the Panasonic DMC FZ-1000 as a backup for I think 5 years more. I have taken it to Europe as a travel camera and have wonderful results. I have not pixel counted but I have some very sharp colorful images that I enjoy. The Sony was too heavy for me and for the weight I could have brought a Nikon with me but would not have had the versatility of the 25mm-400mm of the Panasonic.

You Mean to tell me the cameras have gotten so specialized that they have cameras that are specifically for taking pictures of bridges only?

Any Sony rx100, money and zoom range being the differences between them. I have a VI or M6 with the bigger zoom and love it, fits in my pocket, the 1" sensor gives great results, and the zoom range covers most of what I shoot except birds, and did I say it fits in my pocket. I also have a crop sensor and FF camera.

I have both the Sony RX10 III & IV AND they're both fabulous!

Considered a Sony a number of years ago, couldn't justify the cost to myself, and went with a Panasonic FZ1000i, spending the saved money traveling. Works for me, images look fine, even after my cataract surgery.

What a bridge camera does for me is it allows me to reach the places I want to go as those mountains get higher and steeper every year. While I do wax nostalgic about my Canon T90 SLR and its multiple lenses in their Lowepro PhotoTrekker bag, the adventures I had with it, my FZ1000 allows me the same, and I can immediately see the results.

When I went to Israel 3 1/2 yrs ago I bought a used Panasonic Lumix FZ-200 from another 'hedgehog' for weight/size considerations on a tour. There were some thing I wish were different/better, but the 25-600 plus digital zoom at a constant f/2.8 was great and I got a wall-hanger out of my pics (Dome of the Rock). Still debating whether to take it to Spain next year or go big and take my Sony a77 and a rental lens. (both birthday trips I bought for myself)
