I was wondering what everyone thought about shooting in vibrant mode?. Does anyone know of any down sides?

Some times I shoot vibrant mode when it is overcast, especially a BLAH sky with hardly any detail in that sky.

Not for portraits.

Use it (vivid) most of the time and underexpose 1/3 stop - like my results.

I don't have a "vibrant mode" setting on my Nikon camera (on the mode dial) but I have a "Vivid" setting available in the Picture Control menu. Assuming it's similar to what you are talking about, the main concern would be the color effect on faces. As Goofy pointed out, portraits could be a problem. I'll go beyond that and say that you might have a problem with any photo that features faces prominently.

Do you shoot RAW or JPEG? If RAW, the file is not affected by the Picture Control settings. If JPEG, and you want to edit them, remember that the Vivid setting will reduce the range of adjustments you can make in post-processing.

Shoot raw. Did not know it wouldn't be affected in raw. Very helpful, thanks

Absolutely!
When I got my then new Nikon D200, I set it up as Ken Rockwell recommended. “Vivid”
I quickly learned that not everything he says was to be trusted.
He does have some great info on his site, but you gotta take it in with a few grains of salt.

Ha, I also followed Ken Rockwell's setting suggestions when I got my D5300! He sounds so knowledgeable and authoritative. And I guess to a certain extent he is.

He’s a great resource for some things!
...but not everything.

If I'm shooting JPEG, which is unusual, I have it set in the middle - whatever that's called. I can always make adjustments by processing. I usually shoot raw, though.

I shoot raw - so I can always dial up/down the vibrancy after the fact. Nothing worse than forgetting you have vibrant turned on when shooting a colorful subject.

On my Nikon 7100 I usually am shooting with the “ Fine” setting turned on. Is vibrant better than this?

Depends on the subject. And if you shoot jpgs (see above). In the Fall, Vivid adds punch to autumn leaves. In the Spring, for some of my local azaleas, Neutral gives the truest color. Experiment with the Picture Controls and see what you like.
