A few years ago, I had the good fortune of making the acquaintance of a licensed falconer here in Idaho. We became good friends and he invited me out on one of his outings to take photographs of a young Ferruginous Hawk he was going to release into the wild the following morning.
She was a magnificent bird with a wing spread of a little over 5 feet. He had taken her from a nest on the cliffs overlooking the Snake River and had her for a little over a year. She was mature enough to begin mating, so he was going to release her and let her resume her life as a wild bird. It was a very emotional event for Dave, as he had really formed a bond with this bird.
He released her the following morning, then went back the following day and she returned to him, but on further visits out into the desert, she never showed up again.
These photos were taken with a Pentax K-50 using the superb Pentax-DA 18-135mm WR lens.
Beautiful photos of an amazing bird. Hope she is successful in the wild. Thanks for sharing. Frank

...beautiful creature...!
Really nice shots. I especially like the last one. Many years ago, we went hawking in Ireland. My wife and I each had our own bird and the handler would place hamburger on our gloves to lure them back. It’s exciting to have a hawk heading through the woods straight at you at high speed. Interestingly enough, they were Harris Hawks from Southern Arizona.
Words don't do it justice. Wonderful!
