Here is a picture I took with my D500 at an air show a few weeks ago. Lens was a Nikon 300mm f4 P, 1/1000, f 7.1, ISO 100. Image converted to B&W in Nikon Capture NX-2 after minimal processing in NX-D.

And here is another one that shows more image detail and is in color. D 500, 300mm f4 P lens. 1/1000, f 7.1 ISO 180. Both images were takes using Auto ISO, Aperture priority with shutter speed minimum set to 1/1000.

Before switching cameras, switch reviewers. Move from Rockwell to Thom Hogan. Hogan is much more analytical.

My suggestion on lenses, though, if you were to purchase the D850 would be the 24-70 f2.8. Don't fiddle with the longer lens. If you shoot action, go with the D500.

I own both cameras and love both. If I had to live with 1 camera it would be the D850. You will want the battery grip because it not only increases FPS to 9 but also increases the focus speed of the D850 according to pro Mark Smith. Save yourself some money and buy the Vello version 2 grip from B&H. It actually fits the camera better than the Nikon grip. Buy a genuine Nikon battery and holder (door) for the grip. The generic Wasabi battery charger works great and only cost 59.00 on EBay. Some people have used the Wasabi battery but I wouldn’t. Enjoy your new D850 it is a great camera. I have the Tamron 150-600 G2 lens that you do and it turns out great on the D850. I have a lot of pictures on Flickr under the name Hargas Funk. Congratulations on your new camera!

Thank you very much for your response and your comments. I appreciate your taking the time to educate a fellow hogger. My D850 comes with the Nikon battery holder so I will give that a try. I know that I am getting an additional battery in the "basic kit" that was included but I will most likely purchase another genuine Nikon battery. Eager to try everything out although my wife may make me wait until Christmas. Again, thanks.

You should read up on the grip that takes the larger high output battery. There is a lot more to adding the upgrade than just an extra battery to the D850. It all costs around a 1000.00 using Nikon parts and battery. I was explaining what will work and save money.

Hi Zeke: The Nikon MB-D18 Multi-Power Battery Pack comes with the D850 that I purchased. Besides the additional battery, what specifically do I need in addition? I do know that one thing calls for another but hopefully, I can use that unit without an immense additional expense.

I had two D7100s. Traded one when I upgraded to the 850. Learning curve was big but a great camera once you have a little knowledge. When I damaged my 850 at the beginning of the lockdown I had to get somethings else (Nikon was closed for repairs). The remaining D7100 was just not what I wanted and went shopping, settled on the D500 and bought one. I would recommend the 850 just because it it more versatile and is a great camera. Depending on your budget, either will be great and you will get more than out of your 7100.
