Hello there!! I'm very new to this group and looking forward to learning from you all. I am a hairstylist, not a photographer. I take photos of my guests everyday using my phone. And I can't stand the quality. I really want to up my social media marketing game by taking better photos. My question is this. How do I even begin on researching cameras? I want something decent of course but I don't think I need anything too major. This camera would be mainly used for work photos and I'm sure I'd want to use it on my kids, too.
I mainly take indoor photos of clients but I do occasionally take them outside.
Any advice would be so appreciated!!

Don’t dismiss cell phones so easily.
For what you describe,

This is very good advice considering what you are doing. Taking photos of your clients. If your phone does not give you what you want, either it is an older or cheap phone with limited photo ability or you need some help. What model phone is it ?
If you want to get a camera, I suggest an inexpensive point and shoot. Small and pocket-able.
Here is a good example. End of July and into August, I and my girlfriend went to Florida again. Before we left she went to Walmart and bought a small Canon point'n shooter for about 100 bucks. It takes DAMN good pictures and videos. Easy to use and also has a zoom lens which can be of good use too. There are many options for you. Go to store and like Best buy or a camera store. Put your hands on some and you will be on your way to happiness.
My two cents worth today.
Bruce.

Welcome to UHH!

If you are new to the world of serious photography, you should learn about the different types of cameras, their advantages and disadvantages over each other. Every type has both. You will first notice that they are broken down as Point & Shoot (P&S), Interchangeable Lens Cameras (ILCs) which include DSLRs and Mirrorless, and bridge cameras which are in between P&S and ILCs. There are many articles at various websites, including here.

Check out this thread in the above link, it may prove to be helpful. If you are shooting hairstyles, the lighting is an important aspect of showing your styling work as to color, texture, and shape. Have a read and tell me what you think.

Cellphone cameras are becoming very advanced and can do an acceptable job but a good DSLR or mirrorless camera and a lens with an appropriate focal length for portraiture or HEADshots would serve you well. Theses cameras can be synchronized with a simple but effective flash setup that can provide good facial and HAIR lighting.

The link I have provided started with a similar question to yours.

Rubin;
as CNG CANON pointed out, she has already posted this back in October. To my observation of the post, It appears her interest is limited to just novice personal stuff. I think a simple inexpensive start is all she needs like a Phone or Point'n shooter. She may may find the images to be very good and later on want to expand her photography interests and wish to move into a camera that meets her needs then. In the mean time, I think she should keep it simple and do-able plus less expensive. As you pointed out, there are all kinds of cameras and platform types. Cameras on the cell phones and small inexpensive point and shooters give excellent images and this could easily meet her needs. Also there are used cameras too.
I hope this works out for her and I think it will. it is like swimming, once you get in and start moving around the cold goes away and you start having fun.
Good luck young lady and welcome to the forum. You will be just fine here.
Bruce.

What type phone is it? The better ones have pretty good cameras. What are you unhappy about? Be specific.

Save yourself a 1000 more words and just post an example or two, being sure to store the JPEG attachment. There may be numerous ideas for easy changes to improve the results that require no new equipment.

All replies to your post is good advice. But, we need much more info before we can direct you to the right choices. Budget, what kind of pics interest you, are required for the advice to start. Post at least that info.
