I would like to know if there is a way for me to GPS? locations I want to photograph at. I sometimes find them at the wrong time of day and would like to go back but often, on backroads for example, I don't know where I am. I use a Garmin GPS to get me out of there. What I would like to do is somehow mark where I am with a very brief description of what it is, bridge, barn etc. Any ideas?

I know that if you have an Olympus you can run your images through a smart phone to get GPS information.

See if Canon has a download on their site or on your smartphone available Apps that will do the same for your Canon. Also you could Google the question and see what comes up.
My Garmin (which I don't use for photography) allows marking and naming way points. Yours probably does as well. Check your instructions. Mine is quite old, so probably different on the details.

Don't have one. Canon.
It may depend upon which Canon body you are using. My 7DII and 5DIV both have menu settings to provide GPS info with the EXIF data. The downside of it is that function uses a lot of battery. Carry extras.
Other than that, if you have a smart phone, take a quick snap with it and you can get the GPS coordinates from it.

I may not be reading your question accurately, or you've left out some piece of info that would matter, but....
Since you use a Garmin unit of some sort, is there any reason you can't simply create and mark a waypoint? When I do likewise on my (Garmin) GPS64, I'm allowed the option of including a note, which could be pretty much any piece of info ('best late in day,' 'bring a lunch,' 'avoid if weather is threatening,' etc.) I might want to include. As well, if I've chosen to do so --and I often do--, I can create a route that indicates my starting and ending points, and mark waypoints --potential shooting locations w/notes in your case?-- in between, along some often rambling track. This can be done for either vehicle access or on-foot ventures. I can do much the same using my iPhone, using an app named 'Gaia GPS.' What's more, using nothing more complicated than Siri, I can voice in 'Seri, show the driving route from here to Hwy XXX' or whatever, and that route will pop up in Maps. I do this sort of thing all the time, and probably in territory that's trickier than you might be faced with.
If, on the other hand you were asking about a GPS enabled camera, or an add-on GPS function that will write to your EXIF data, that's a different matter.

Well, grab a shot with your phone, it would have the GPS info in EXIF right? You can then go back to the exact spot when time/light is better for the final shot.
I also make use of an app on my iPhone called follow me, which tracks my location by time & GPS info. It will show a track map or allow downloading a log that will be merged with photos in Lightroom to map each based on time taken.

I do both. Image with the phone with location enabled,
and have FollowMee (Android).
I also have a GPS location display app on my phone, but I have to write it down.
Then I can look on a map to see where it is located, how to get there (again) and check with the photographer's ephemeris.

I do not have an answer to your question. But there may be a way.
I use a Canon T2I. I transfer photos to a Verison pad to store and mail out. The tablet will store the picture and I can get location thru the information stored in the pad. This even if tablet is not with me when I shot the picture. I usually transfer within a few days at home.
My conclusion is something in my camera knows and records location. I have tried to find more on this, but no luck.
Since I like having location information, no gripes, but I would like to know how this happens.

Are you sure the tablet isn't marking where the tablet is at the time you transfer?
I think the T2i does not have GPS.
A basic way would be google maps. Long press to place a pin, then use the menu that pops up to save the pin as a favorite or bookmark in a list.

The Garmin GPS will allow you to store coordinates , or at least mine does.!!!

I use a device that is attached to my camera , its third party made by Di-GPS. its plugs into a 10 pin socket on my Nikon, but they make various models for different camera . It automatically adds the location to the exif data . Been using it for several years and its been excellent . Very light and don't even notice it .
Good luck
Prior to getting a GP-1 for my Nikon(s), I used a Garmin handheld unit. I'd simply put a waypoint in when I took a photograph. The GP-1 is a lot less tedious.
