Beautiful image and composition. There is some sort of fringing along the top of the cliffs, which might be artifacts from sharpening or clarity adjustments. I think it can be cleaned up fairly easily in black and white by working at the pixel level. Tedious, but for a print, I'd say it's worth the effort. My only other suggestions (and you won't really know how it looks till you try it...) would be to darken the image overall to produce a lower key image, and perhaps to apply a yellow or orange filter to dramatize the sky a little more.

Those are just suggestions, though. I love the composition and overall look of the scene. Clean up that top of the ridgeline and you've got something wall-worthy.

Thank you. I think pulling down the sky luminance too far caused the fringing. A filter may be a better chice.

lends its self well to 1001 changes in tone via Topaz BW2.
A most unusual photo... so many textures and shades of gray. Andsel Adams would give you a hug.

I really like the view you have captured. My tastes run to a bit darker images, so I'd probably take the exposure down a tad. But that's personal preference.

The monochrome trend does seem to be toward darker. Similar to the (my taste) oversaturated color renditions. Thanks for your response.

I would prefer more contrast in this shot. A couple of things that cannot be seen in this shot are what appear to be faces on the left face of the canyon wall and, if one were to look closely, a hiking trail on the right wall delineated by poles and chains or hikers if on the trail. The advantage to seeing the poles or hikers is to give perspective to the enormity of the canyon walls which are 1500' in height. Hikers in comparison look like ants on the leg of an elephant

A very good "take" on the type for shot, whch is usually highly contrasted, almost to cliché status. Definitely creatively expressive of light's existence. One thing you might consider, done as a rule by good watercolorists, who also work high key: push 5-10% to strong darks, perhaps SOME of the foliage on both sides, and A BIT of the deepest point of the gorge.

Hi, Bill,
At first glance, I thought this image was reminiscent of the graveyard image I rated earlier...and then realized both were your images. It may likely be that you and I just differ in what we each consider an optimal spectrum of grays in an image.
Again, in This one, I like the impact (that site is packed with impact!) and the composition (here based on linear perspective leading to a central VP). The overall tonality I consider flat and could stand an increase in mid-tone contrast. Softness of focus increases toward the tops of the cliffs and with distance.

Impact: 4
Tech: 2.5
Comp: 4
Total 10.5/15

I have to agree with Dave about the oveall tonality. Be brave with contrast. It makes or breaks a B&W image.
