ND or not ND?

I went to Cumberland Falls KY yesterday and really enjoyed the park. I took photos handheld, and took others with a 3 stop and also a 10 stop ND filter. I have known some who strongly dislike the slow shutter speed photos of rapids/falls so certainly it is personal preference. I think both versions have their place. By the way, this Falls, during full moon, has a Moonbow. It is the only place that does this in the western hemisphere. I missed that chance by one week.

Very nice. Unless you're entering a contest or getting paid, it doesn't matter what other people like.

True. I was a bit surprised when someone made such strong statements against the long shutter speed look, but it does not stop me from doing it, obviously.

Yes, most definitely a personal choice.

I like both here for different reasons.

After seeing many different types of falls, I've found that some falls look better with a longer or shorter exposure time. One size (time) does not fit all falls.

I would agree with that. In fact, in the closer photos to these falls, too much time/smoothing detracted from it, it needs some texture, to my eye. The last photo, further back, the longer shutter time allows the patterns in the water to emerge.

That entire area of the country, Daniel Boone National Forest/Cumberland Falls State Park, is full of natural beauty.

I wish I had known you were going as I could have tipped you off to some great local sites.

I hope you stayed at the DuPont Lodge and dined in the dining room overlooking the Cumberland River.

The last photo is very good, it’s the one I prefer. The others are also good but the last one is the one that I really prefer.

I much prefer the first one with the “normal” water.

I wish you had too. No, we did not stay in the lodge, but we did eat in that dining room yesterday. We stayed closer to Cumberland Gap National Park. It was kind of a last minute trip and I have not been able to aggressively enjoy the area as I came down with a rotten cold as we began the trip. We are heading back north today but any tips you have for travelling up I75 would be appreciated.

I had horrid issues the day before shooting another waterfall with the 10 stop, was dealing with blur, so I started yesterday with the 3 stop. I rather like both results. The 3 stop allowed more texture to remain.

That one does have the rainbow too, which was a big part of why I liked that one. That park has many different areas for viewing the falls, some are very easy to walk to, some require a few steps, some require more hiking. I was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful it is.
