October is a good time to visit Queensland. I would suggest that you make Cairns your base. There is easy access to the Great Barrier Reef. The wildlife around Cairns, on the Atherton Tableland and in the Daintree is varied and generally accessible. The Julatten area is a mecca for birdlife, with access to savannah, rainforest, mountain, lowland and shore areas. Look up Far North Queensland on Google and you'll find a wealth of information. It is much wiser to select one centre than to spend days on the road! It has been said that Australia has lots of wonderful places- unfortunately they are separated by hundreds of miles of nothing!
I don't wish to antagonize my Gold Coast friend, and though there is much to see up north, according to Google your current temperature is 9 degrees centigrade and Cairns is forecast to be over 30 degrees next week. Expect much the same in October, weigh up your comfort level.
