Comparison of cameras for my wife

Planning a trip to Alaska next summer. Doing all the usual spots, Denali, Anchorage, kodiak island, and more. She is debating between two Canon Cameras that she likes. She has a very good eye and used to take outstanding photos with film cameras but wants to try digital. Looking for size and portability and ease of use. Would appreciate any comments and observations..
She is looking at the Canon Powershot G7 X Mark ll or the less expensive Canon Powershot SX740 HS. Comments suggestions appreciated.

The sx740 has quite a bit more telephoto range.
When you say "that she likes," you're referring to just internet browsing? No chance to see how the LCD works in bright light? It appears that neither has a viewfinder, which would be a deal breaker for me. If she hasn't previously used a digital camera, will she be interested in shooting raw and learning how to edit?

I would be nice if someone had a chart of the 10ish key specs of each of the several Powershot models. For me, I'd look at the camera with a) the highest pixel resolution b) the newest DIGIC processor and c) the one that captures in RAW (if some don't now in 2019). Beyond that, they're pretty much all the same size, shape and weight.
I have what looks like an older Powershot G9X II. For the price of one of those power shots, why not get her an M series camera and a starter or kit lens.

After a good amount of research, I recently purchased a Canon Powershot SX730, refurbished, from the Canon, USA, website. This is the previous model of the SX740. I have just started to use the camera, and so far, I like the camera. These models have the longest zoom lens in a pocketable camera.
I started my recent research after reading about someone who carried both the SX730 and the G7X Mark II. They both use the same battery. The G7X should have better image quality and the SX730 has the longer zoom. It sounds like a good combination to travel light and cover a wide range of subjects.
If saving money doesn’t matter, I would go for the SX740 over the SX730.
I have handled the G7 X Mark II. I like the camera and may buy one, also from Canon, USA, refurbished.
If you want, I can post some photos from the SX730.

The G7X mkII has a 1” type sensor and zooms from 24-100mm. The SX740 has a 1/2.3” sensor and zooms out to 960mm. If long reach isn’t a requirement, the G7X mkII would be the choice. You can crop more to bring in a subject and retain nice IQ. The SX 740 zooms farther, but has a small sensor, which means poorer performance in low light situations. A third choice, if price isn’t an issue, is the more expensive G5X MKII. It has a 1” type sensor and zooms to 120mm, but more importantly, it has an electronic viewfinder. If long telephoto reach isn’t important, this would make a for a good choice.
Again, the right camera is the one that satisfies her needs.

I have the Canon G7X Mark II. This camera is amazing. I get excellent quality photos from it. I only shoot raw, and this camera can shoot raw or jpeg.

I only shot with the Sony HX-99. The 24-750 mm ZEISS lens is the best on the market, the pop up viewfinder and fold out rear screen is great. I get 20X30 show prints with this camera. In fact, at my last show, I sold two prints that could have paid for that camera twice.
PS. it also shoot RAW.

My wife sounds similar to her. We looked around and chose a micro 4/3's. Olympus makes cameras that are easy to carry, easy to use, and capable enough to grow into. She loves hers and it is fun for me to play with too.

I agree about no viewfinder! Especially where she used to shoot film, I think not having one would drive her nuts. Is there a camera store near you? Even a Best Buy would do. It’s very important that she hold it in her hands.
