I find it shocking that the highly regarded LR does not allow you to fill in areas that were not part of the original photo.

LR is not a "full featured" editor, although it is ok for most of my work. If you want all the bells and whistels use Photoshop".

Doesn't your camera have a leveling icon in your view finder?

Not that I know of. It's a D7100. My previous Nikons (D7000, D50, FE, N70, NikkormatFT) didn't either.

There’s a penalty to pay in PP, you’ll lose some dimension when the photo gets cropped from leveling. I shoot crooked all the time and sometimes it’s so bad I lose quite a bit of the composition as the PP crops to fit the new frame. I usually try to level in RAW and then just accept the loss.

I never have had that problem.
My Sony a99II has a level in the viewfinder.
I just have to remember when I take a shot.

You can set Fn button to turn it on and off.
There may also be other buttons you can use.

Well, there is a thing called "Virtual Horizon", but it's a full screen display (instead of what the camera is pointing at). It does not put any indication in the viewfinder. It might be useful for tripod photography, but I don't see it being very helpful when hand held.

Guess you didn't bother looking at page 254 in the manual where it shows the "Viewfinder" Virtual Horizon.

Maybe ignorance is bliss.

No, it's called "I can't find the manual." :)

They are all online from Nikon, no charge. I keep mine on my tablet and computer/

Thanks. I have saved the document file to my computer and have set the Fn button. The horizon indicator is pretty faint, though, in the viewfinder. I've never used the Fn button at all--didn't even know it was there (it's in an awkward spot).

Hi Pat. My Olympus cameras have a "level" built in as a display option. I find it very useful. JimR
