I was thinking of purchasing a P1000, but the photos Iv'e seen all seem to be very dull and lack the vibrant colors of other good digital cameras. Any comments?

They were probably shot in RAW so they may very well seem dull. They need to be processed before you can judge them accurately.

There is a zoologist/photographer named Ron McGill that just gave a talk at the Nikon Photoplus event that uses the P1000 and he really likes it. If you go to this website (hopefully it will create the link...if not..copy/paste) and scroll down to day 3. On the right side of day 3 you can scroll down to Ron McGills name then click on it. It will come up with a photo of Josh Cripp and says that he is next but it you click on play button it will come up with Ron McGills talk. He is a very excited speaker but he really keeps your interest.

Hope this helps.

I watched the Magill lecture and it was very informative. I was interested on his P1000 comments, but he did not talk very much about the camera. Only about why he used it. Just a suggestion, he needs to cut back on the coffee.

I have had a P1000 for about a year. I am a semi-professional photographer and a professional birding tour leader, and also have a TON of other Nikon gear and cameras. I have to say that I simply love the P1000 for the versatility and size. I took this camera (and none of my other huge and heavy kit) to Alaska this past year for 6 weeks (Adak, Gambell, Nome, Denali, Anchorage, Seward, Barrow and Dutch Harbor) and captured 6500 images. With the available filters (UV, Polarizing and ND), the incredible zoom (try not to go too far past 2000mm), and the ability to shoot in RAW, this is a real winner. I am bringing my Nikon D500 with 200-500 as well as the P1000 to Thailand and Cambodia within the next three weeks, and this combination will allow me wide-angle landscape shots as well as super-zoom opportunities. If I were to take one camera on a foreign trip, it would be the P1000.

Funny! That applies to a lot of online people.

Well, Carvan, I think you have your answer in the above comments. My P1000 produces wonderful brilliant color pictures. But it also, like every other camera, will produce dull pics if you set it wrong.

Good luck with your purchase. Use your new P1000 in good health.

If you process RAW, get the P1000, if not, the P900 is a smaller, lighter, less expensive alternative.

I am amateur, amateur, but I love the Nikon P1000. I shoot RAW (unless I use a Scene mode) and use Lightroom to get the look I want. I also have a great little Sony (RX100VI) if I need to put my camera in my pocket or purse. The Nikon won't fit! ;) I would not want to be without either one of these cameras.

I have two friends that have P900’s and the pictures are awesome. Great zoom without changing lenses, etc.

I have had great experience wth P1000. Lots features to work n play wth than average point n shoot.
Colors can be vibrant.
For me, learning the camera (as is always the case) was more evident wth P1000 than with other cameras.
Autofocus, at times, birds in flight was slow. But, it has a dial up option for Bird fotography n worked great for me. In fact, I just ordered a Kindle book (Photographer's guide to Nikon CP p1000...Alexander White $9.99)to understand n be able to get more out of P1000.
My advice...go for it.

Any camera that Alexander White writes about is a "must own" for that camera's owners. I have three of his books for my Nikons and I recommend, Carvan, that if you are going to purchase the P1000 that you get Whites marvelous book.

The predecessor to the P1000 was the P900. It took photos in JPEG only, and had a focal range to 2000mm. It took great looking JPEG photos too. At the maximum zoom, sharpness was diminished. A tripod was often necessary. The P1000 is capable of shooting JPEG and RAW. As, mentioned in an earlier thread, processing may be needed. Or shoot JPEG only, at focal ranges not too distant. The P1000 should produce good photos, better than the P900. I don't know if you have a tripod. I would purchase one, if I owned that camera. No need for a very expensive one either. Keep experimenting with the camera. With and without a tripod. The P1000 should be great for moon shots. Purchase it. If it does not meet your standards, you can return it within a certain time frame. Yes, there are other good Bridge cameras. But, none with a 3000mm focal range. Good luck.

I own the p1000 and find it a real fun camera to have. It gives you alot of options in one handy package. Maybe some of the other cameras may give better results but I think you can have more fun with this one.
