I took this on as a challenge to myself. My original shot below #2, is a disaster photo-scenically. After several hours into it in Photoshop this top one came out. Not sure if the result was worth the time or if I should just pick lower hanging fruit to work on.
Nice! Can I have a go at it?
It's very nice. Somewhere in between may have been slightly better. Hard to say, though.

I still have all the layers. I can adjust them to bring back more of the shadows. That's a good thought. I've been looking at it too long, yes, I have several hours into it, and have lost my initial first impressions. The problem I see with this exercise is it may have turned into chicken salad but not steak.
Photo-scenically speaking I'd say your original is not without its merits. The subject is an interesting variation on a common theme, the road leads the eye towards it and the trees provide some natural framing. If all you'd done is boost the barn it would have lifted the shot up a level or two.

Go for it.
This is the kinda thing I do with my chicken droppings. It's fun and sometimes I get something interesting.
Good. A good idea for a subject to do something creative with.
I like the original. Hey, that's just me.

Out of the three images above, I choose the first one!

Something in between the two would have been what I would have aimed for.

As R.G said, the road leads the eye up to the barn... Maybe just leaving the orig. road and bringing the barn a little closer to the 2nd. image. Either way, don't you just love working on older images just to see ..... I know I do !
