Should I make the leap to PhotoShop CS6?

Just got an offer from Amazon.ca for a $400 rebate
off CS6, thats on top of $100 discount already,
brings it down to $299 total

I guess they made the offer because I purchased
Elements 10 about eight months ago off Amazon.ca

I just bought Light Room4 three weeks ago and
haven't really given it too much of a go yet,
but so far, don't much care for it, as compared to the
ease of Elements.
Like to be able to work in RAW, that's why I bought
Light Room4, but in order to do futher manipulation
beyond LR I have to revert to 8bit in Elements.
Hence my reason for considering the deal.

Is PhotoShop that different from Elements in practice?
Is this kind of deal on PS available often, or is this
an opportunity I should jump on?

I have PS6 and believe me the deal you are getting is well worth it. I also have lightroom4 and am not overly impressed either, intends to take over the computer to much for my liking. Ernie

If it's slam dunk, ease of use, Photoshop might not be the program for you. To get the full benefits of Photoshop there is a pretty good learning curve. I can't speak for light room but elements has never shown me much. I have been running Photoshop since version 7 (20 years) and Photoshop is my main photo editing software. Presently using CS6. I also use Topaz and onOne products. Hope this helps.

Good shooting

What are you trying to accomplish that you cannot make work in Elements? I have stayed with Elements so that I can afford to upgrade every couple of years to get the new features. If I purchased full Photoshop I would feel obligated to use it until the cows came home by themselves, and perhaps miss the latest improvements.

You can solve that problem by adjusting the defaults.

Whether or not CS6 is going to be for you is something only you can answer. What does it do that PSE10 doesn't do and you desperately need?
BTW I'm pretty sure that PSE10 does RAW. I wouldn't swear to it though.

(1 & 2) I got the same deal in 2005 direct from Adobe. It is a good deal. CS 7 will be about the same price. I have CS 5. I did the trial version of CS 6 and have decided to wait for CS 7.

(3 & 4) I have Lightroom 3, little used because it does not have "save as."

(5) No, just more goodies. Compare Elements to a buffet line of food without dessert. Photoshop has more food on the buffet line and lots of dessert. I think the deal is available in the future, but the sooner you use Photoshop, the better. CS 6 has a better content aware than CS 5

Actually, there is a "save as" but it's called "Export." Click on the Export button, or keyboard shortcut it with Cntrl + Shift + E. Once you are there, click on "File Naming" and you can name the file anything you want.

Regarding price on Adobe, they have student/teacher/educational pricing and then pro pricing -- $200 for Adobe CS5 extended; and lately I have seen tremendous discounts on Adobe software regardless but closer to 300-400 for the same.
I moved from PC to MAC desktop in 2009; and, ( a learning curve for sure -- but I love Adobe photoshop extended and what endless possibilities for creativity, if you have the time, and some things have been made very simple and powerful as software goes)
I find my self using Adobe photoshop CS5 extended & plug ins and then importing finished picture files into light room 3 and using Light Room to ready my photos for whatever purpose ( web, print, video, etc.. ) When Exporting from LR3, you can "save as " very easily. Whenever I have exported or saved as in photoshop CS5 extended for Web I always get file to large for web ... have not taken time to figure out as easy to import to LR3 and export w/or w/o meta data etc.. for whatever purpose. Sometime I wish they would shirttail these two programs together... but that is only me...probably.. ;=)

Not unless you have loads of Money and Time. This is very sofisticated and will contain lots of Stuff you will never use, Elements is all most people need , don't waste your cash !.

Always had Macs. I have used different desktop photo programs. PSE 10 has a lot of punch if you know all the ins and outs. Others talking about the lack of dessert, desserts tend to make you fat (bloatware). Learning curve difference is important too. Take a good to great photo and PSE10 is fine. To compensate for some features I also have Perfect Photo Suite 6.1. from onOne Software. Got it in a great deal by upgrading from PhotoEssentials 4 (plug in filter). 6.1 has hundreds of effects, portrait help, resizing, masks, layers, focus, and frame. I also get free lessons (Brian Matiash) and additions for effects. Hope that helps.

I also bought CS6 quite happy with it. The improved Content Aware feature is really cool. I was hoping as promised the deblurr feature Adobe talked about. That apparently did not happen. So I assume it will come with CS7. Since they advertize it for CS6 it should be a free ad on. Seems like false advertizing to me. But hey its all in the sale of the product isn't it.

Adobe must be getting ready to release CS7. B&H just had a big sale on Photoshop+lightroom bundles too. Be a little wary; the edu licences can't be upgraded.

In truth, GIMP will do 80% or more or what PS does. The problem is that Ps is the industry standard at a certain level. Nearly all the cool plugins are for Lr and Ps. Most of the advanced techniques are demo'ed on Ps.

I wasn't going to pay their list price, but the bundle B&H had (and the Amazon one might even be better) was too good to pass up. Now I'll be on their release train.

Not bloody likely -- CS6 was only released not quite four months ago. No way they're about to go to CS7 -- I'd be shocked to see it before summer 2013 at the earliest.

And while the education versions cannot be upgraded, if you still qualify you'll be able to get the education price on the next version as well, and those prices are similar to the retail upgrade price.
