Pause for a moment and look back along the footsteps of your journey. Do you see a path climbing the steady incline toward skill and knowledge or just a trail of discarded cameras?

What’s the point of our photography? Everything seems absurd until someone admires your equipment.

I would much rather have people admire my images.

Correct answer, right on the money.

For some, it seems. Disrespectful of an honest query, to feed a personal need, to others.

For me, taking landscape and wildlife photos is time for reflection, and exercise. I donate a lot of my photos to the Yosemite Conservancy and our local parks and recreation.

I'll admit, that when I go to some events, and see other photographers, some amateurs like myself, and some pro photographers. I will ask them about their equipment. And most will accommodate you in a friendly manner. I met a part time NFL photographer. He took me to his vehicle, opened his trunk, and showed me his Canon 1DX camera, 24-70mm, 70-200mm, and a very expensive 400mm prime lens. All "L" lenses. He knew I was an amateur. But, he gave me his time. He told me, that his most used lenses, were the 24-70mm f2.8, and the 70-200mm f2.8. Would every pro photographer had done that? Probably not.

At 76 years old I can't get in, out, around, up or down like I used to. But wisdom does occasionally come with old age.
This does not apply to snap shooters, they do it without thinking.

When I was about 14 I got my first 35mm camera, an Argus C3, a cheap exposure meter and a few rolls of Plus-X and Tri-X and set out to become the next Ansel Adams. Within a couple of months I realized that B&W film, processed by my local Rexall Drug Store was not going to make it. I switched to Kodachrome and never looked back. Fortunately I saved most of those terrible negatives because they are a time machine. You may not believe me now but you will.

The most important thing I have learned in my photographic life, unfortunately too late, is always take location shots. The final photo may be a work of art but the location shot will be a memory. If it isn't you are shooting in the wrong location.

Survey question....

Photography is your passion,,, OK so you have invested a lot of money,,, and your family has survived many GAS attacks,,, you have several camera bodies and a trio of “L” glass,,, you shoot a thousand shots a month, and spend hours in post processing.... So now what? What is the final goal? Where do all of these images go? Inquiring minds want to know.

I don't shoot "L" glass...anything but Canon is my motto.

Images go where they need to. Weddings to the happy couple. Event shots to the sponsors. Portraits to the people. Sports shots to magazines, sponsors, athletes, fans. The rest are for me to do with as I please. Print a few, post a bunch, delete profligately.

SO....just another hogg’s Opinion.. But I like your question. And will there-fore, answer it for my opinion. I belong to a camera club locally and I very much enjoy being able to get together to see each others’ GEMS. We meet twice a month. Gas has taken its’ toll on me..but, since I get a bi-monthly allowance, I try to save my own BUDGETED moneys for “most” of my gear. Bye the way, I for one, don’t think ANYTHING about your initial inquiry was “invalid” And if I did, I would be kind enough to “SIT-ON-IT!!

I only shoot and exhibit them to family , friends & myself.....no copyright or gallery credentials. The ones worth a mention are printed ,matted & framed by me and delivered to whomever and some into one of several large albums left laying around for guests to enjoy.

The rest are in countless files by year only as I can no longer remember their relevance or care one way or the other. None of those are backed-up except for the second computer which carries duplicates only for the purpose of my using either one upon demand at the time of occupancy under workflow requirements.

Oddly enough , it makes for a pleasant surprise when I rediscover an old favorite as I pass over them occasionally while on my way to something else or simply glancing through them for the fun of it.

Since my memory is practically gone these days , I don't live in he past but only in the moment and I am no longer attached to them as I once was. Now , in the autumn of my existence , I pleasure the experience over the possession of stuff and encourage others to do likewise. I share everything I have with everyone I greet without prejudice or pretext or malice toward any living creature.

I hope that some of the works I donated are held in high regard but I didn't make the gift of them with that purpose in mind. I love most all the works for their individual qualities and the heart-felt efforts of the photographers that made them . They are first and foremost a vision of a fleeting instant in time-recorded for all to witness and enjoy.

Thank you for your perspective. I particularly liked your comment: "Now , in the autumn of my existence , I pleasure the experience over the possession of stuff and encourage others to do likewise. I share everything I have with everyone I greet without prejudice or pretext or malice toward any living creature."....Wise words to live by.....

The camera is part of my life - always within reach, just in case. Don’t go looking for the image; just want to capture it when it presents itself. The only time I have ever purposely taken pictures that weren’t necessarily there was when I walked the beach front of Harrison County Mississippi after Hurricane Camille in 1969. 2,430 images to record beachfront property damage.

My photo philosophy is stated on my web page: www.fehutchings.com

I have never owned a camera that cost over $1,000. Have owned Pentax, Nikon, Sony, and now Fuji. Lenses primarily prime maybe a couple of short zooms along the way

Back when I was young, slim, trim and good looking I had visions of traveling the word as a professional photographer, but life had different ideas.
I have many photographs stored, but I have no illusions that any one will be interested in them or even take time to look at them.
So now, at 71, my goal is to enjoy myself taking pictures.

I am always looking for that one great shot, and I know it's out there!!! And I shoot on a professional basis, that means lots of shots. I like to frame some of my images for myself, and I give a lot away. Thanks, Boone.
