My visit to South Africa’s Kruger National Park was an eye-opener in many ways. I was lucky enough to see a host of wild animals. Learning about the inter-related lives of each one has altered how I view wildlife. For this post, I’m focusing on hyaenas. They get a bad rap from many people, but they turned out to be my favourites. Like vultures, they eat carcasses of dead animals. Can you imagine the state of the park if there weren’t creatures to clean up the messes left by the wild cats – the lions, leopards and cheetahs? We (my sisters and brother-in-law) came across a den of hyaenas with various ages of animal. The babies and those a little older were delightful. Hope you enjoy some of these images.
Beautiful shots DebAnn, the young ones look so cute and cuddly. would not like to be on the end of a bite though..

Right! I was glad we were in the safari vehicle.
Hyenas eat live people too.
Beautiful animal and shots. Looks like it would make a nice house pet.

Nice shots of these predators. They do look cute as can be but I know better!

May be. But have you ever heard of a Hyaena eating a human?

Those young ones are awfully cute. But, Mom was in the background watching every move!

Nice images. Thanks for sharing them. Like vultures and buzzards they do get a bad rap. However they have very highly developed social behaviours (a sort of hyaena culture) and are remarkably well tuned for their place in the wild. Unfortunately they are not so beautiful as an eagle or a conduit or we would overlook their eating habits.
As for their eating humans. I can find a few documented case of a hyaena hunting, killing or eating a human. They after all a very powerful pack Hunter and are smart enough to attack weaker pray. Humans, in the Bush, are weaker pray. But that's what predictors do. On the other hand more then a few people have fallen pray, fallen may be the key word, to domestic pigs.

Well, I would never compare a hyaena to a bird, but they are certainly beautiful in their own right.
