GREAT Photography course

I started with a canon bridge camera a number of years ago, and ultimately bought a Sony A6000 when I went to interchangeable lenses. I did some reading online, did a couple of Lynda.com photography courses, and of course practiced. I’ve had some good photos, but also many that left something to be desired. I recently retired, and decided to get serious about this photography thing. I stumbled across a course out of Great Britain called A Year With My Camera (AYWMC) by Emma Davies. It’s free, all online, though you can purchase an app and/or a book, if you want. There is a new lesson each week. I am 5 weeks into the program, and I have already learned so much. I wanted to share this with you because I think even more experienced photographers could learn something. It is answering many of the questions I’ve had. If you want to learn more, please give it a go.

". . . many that left something to be desired." Before digital, I always felt good if a 36 exposure roll had as many as two good images, and with digital I'm in about the same ball park. I wonder if there might be a consensus among pros as to their percentage of shots they keep.

Just copy/paste this phrase into the Google search engine: A Year With My Camera (AYWMC) by Emma Davies

Sometimes it is best to not provide a link early in a main discussion topic as it seems to cause the topic to end up in the black hole of Links/Resources.

To the OP: thanks so much for this info. Sounds intriguing!

Why do you, and others as well, think of Links and Resources as a black hole? You can find interesting things there---if you go there and look. And there are no more pointless posts there than there are here in MPD.

Sorry, poor description. That section doesn't have its own search function (the UHH Search is poor - see more in next paragraph). It seems like you'd have to check it daily, then bookmark topics that might be of interest. I use Google search and anything I ever want is a simple click away.

UHH Search - based on key words in topic titles and we know how often topic titles are not descriptive. Also, if you write 3 words, the search result will include a topic with just one of those words, meaning you may end up with mostly irrelevant links.

Also, the number of returns is limited to a single page, and are not in date order on that page. I once found a page of returns for 2012 - 2014, and then another page when I filtered by "most recent" but that was only 2018/2019. There was no way to see what was posted from 2015 - 2017 on the subject I desired. You can, however, use Google search and specify just the UHH website if looking for a specific thread.

Maybe if there was less negativity about L&R people, especially new members, would be less reluctant to post in that section. I subscribe to L&R, so when there is a new post it shows up in Newest Topics for me.

I'm a long long way from even the hint of pro . But what I keep is representative of my best and not a pro's best. That said, on a really good day I might save to import 15-25% of what I took. Then cull again and keep to process 25-50% of them. So If I shoot 200 images I really only process 10? And if I'm having a really good day 5 might be keepers.

But then I'm shooting critters and not paying customers.

Just look at how many touches it gets compared to other forums and you will see. (like 10%)

The title just does not garner interest. The links fit better elsewhere.

I brought this to the attention of the moderator some years ago and got dumped for suggesting such a thing.

I'm pretty sure you know that I'm smart enough to know this, but I point things like this out so that in future posts other people might think to include the link so that we can see right away as to what they are talking about and excited about. I also know that it would be moved to Links/Resources but that's ok because if the title is interesting I'll click on it and check it out no matter what UHH section the post is in. Just sayin', it would improve a person's topic and make it easy for others to find.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Although I am not a rank beginner I think I will have a go at it. Maybe I will pick up a few pointers. At the very least it will get me out and about with my camera. I’ve been looking for motivation and this may be that motivator...
The next class starts Thursday; I am looking forward to it!

You can’t go wrong, since it’s free. After being 5 weeks into the course I bought the book on Amazon, since I know I plan to stick with it, but you certainly don’t need to.

Did you purchase both books--part 1 and 2?

Not yet. I’ll buy book 2 when I get to those lessons.
