In my earlier quote I said the distance of vision before you can use rear fog light is 1000 mtrs .it is actually 100mtrs. Sorry for that error. Allan.

Or if you're like many UK drivers, 'thats a pretty light on my dashboard I wonder what is for?'

On a Mercedes, if you pull the headlight switch out it activates the front fog lamps and brightens one rear tail light. Also, lots of European cars have a position on the headlight switch to leave either the left or right side parking lamps on when parked on a narrow street at night to mark the outside corners of the car.

I’ve got fog lights front and rear, which only operate when the headlights are on, and both must be turned on manually (switch on dash). If you put on the high beams, the front fog lights go out; both front and rear, they came as standard equipment.

I have a 2007 Volvo XC70 that has a rear fog light. It's a very bright auxiliary bulb in the taillight housing, left side only. Has its own switch. It's on the left side so it tells approaching cars which side they can pass on (to the left of the light). Very nice option, though I'm almost never in fog to use the front or rear fog lights.

England is a foggy country, so it's a common, even required, feature.

It might not be, but should be possible to switch headlights off and keep front fog lights on. This is because in thick fog, headlights bounce off the fog, blinding the driver, wheras the low down foglights do not, giving better vision of the road (for slow driving).

I have the white fog lights on my Ford Explorer that have a separate switch from the headlights. I almost never have to use them since fog is practically nonexistent around here.

You're right, and it used to be the case, but no more. These days front fogs are more akin to 'driving lights' or used, automatically, when going round corners to light up the dead area the normal headlights don't show.

Sadly too many are on 'just for show' irrespective of the conditions.

Following on from the above, where the rear fog light can only come on when the main headlights are on, many cars now have front foglights as well, able to be activated only after the rear ones are on, and not on their own. This helps the person in front know he has a follower.........

It is standard equipment in Aus and should only be used in low visibility. There are also two white lights at the front. Unfortunately many drivers see them as extra headlights and have them on all the time.

We have the white fog lights up front - either standard or optional - depending on the model. They can be used with the headlights, but not alone and not with the high beams. When the high beams are on, that's considered four lights, and that's the limit up front. If you have the fog lights turned on, they will turn off when you switch to high beams. Interesting tidbit. In 1957, when auto maker introduced four headlights, state legislators had to scramble to make them legal in their states. Even daytime running lights aren't standard here.

I found this article about rear fog lights in the USA. I suspect automakers are a main force in keeping them off cars. They have consistently resisted everything from padded dashboards to seat belts to airbags to anti-lock brakes. Big Business runs this country through their loyal employees - politicians.
