Cranberry Harvest, Cape Cod

It is Cranberry Harvest time on Cape Cod again.

Cranberries can be harvested by the mechanical 'dry' method or by the much more interesting 'wet' method. With the wet harvest, the cranberry bogs are flooded with a couple of feet of water. A ride-on beater knocks the berries off the bushes and they float to the surface a couple of days later. If conditions are right, the wind will bow all the berries into a convenient corner of the bog where they are sucked up into trucks. The workers scoop the berries towards the pump with long booms that create great leading lines.

Very interesting storytelling series! For some reason that man's cigarette ash about to fall into the bog bothers me a lot

A nice dialogue which goes well in explaining a beautiful set of photos. Looks like a back breaking job. Mahalo for sharing.

Great place to skate and play hockey on in the winter. They leave the bogs covered with water and they freeze with a nice surface. Spent many hours as a kid on them.

Thanks for all of the kind comments folks.
Linda, I think your cranberry jelly is safe from contamination - that guy had the same butt hanging from his lip the whole time I was there.
Mizzee - you got to come and see it. These were right beside Exit 10 on Route 6 heading towards Brewster. They do the Harvest every year right around Columbus weekend.
Everybody else - This is a great time of year to visit Cape Cod or anywhere in New England.

I did watch a short piece on TV about the Bog Harvest. There is an extensive washing process. I never order any drink with lemon or lime wedges. I am always thinking of the person who is cutting the fruit. Scratching touching and what ever. Still continuing to cut things.

Don’t worry. They probably go through some heavy chemical washing before they reach your table. Hope that makes you feel better😊
