As a septuagenarian I've been at this for quite some time, but I'm still learning.

Two great images. Curious why you shoot at 5.6 and not 8? Also I would crop the last image so the main vertical tree branch is gone. My Julyuagenarian advise.

Thanks you very much.
When I'm not using flash the light determines my settings. For birds I want the shutter speed fast and the ISO low. If the light was right I'd shoot f8 or f9. The ISO here was 1000 and the aperture was at its widest.
I prefer to shoot in the silent mode when I can, which is helpful in not spooking birds at close range. Of course when using flash, but silent mode won't work... although it hardly matters.
Thanks for your advice but the second image is cropped just the way I want it.
What is a Julyuagenarian
As an octogenarian, I say keep at it kid, you are learning just fine!
I like birds as well. Nah don't crop it. Have some room gives them a sense of place and environment. Thats for sharing.

You don’t need to learn much more - the Woodpecker shot is excellent! Kudos. We have several just like him that visit our feeder - always a treat in their “formal attire”.
