Auto ISO is a great tool, but not in all situations. My camera tends to overexpose, which I hear is not uncommon with a D750. I usually underexpose by 1/3 of a stop and am very happy with the results. I rarely shoot ETTR but usually shoot manual with my intentional underexposure. With Auto ISO it is difficult to employ the "exposure compensation" when I do my slight underexposing. The AutoIso forces the camera to adjust to a non-compensated exposure in many cases.

Is there a way to do both?

Why don't you use Custom Menu Setting b6: Fine Tune Optimal Exposure? You can add/subtract exposure up to ±1 stop in 1/6 stop increments. That should work better than dialing in 1/3 underexposure.

I apologize for replying to the OP by ending my post with a question. It seems that I may have inadvertently hijacked the OP's post and distracted people from it. Sorry.
I do however appreciate all the helpful suggestions that I received. I have tried some of these in the past without the success I'd hoped for but will try again.
Again, sorry for changing the focus of the original post.

I forgot to quote reply, so this is an edited post.
Responding to a post that said that Nikons do have a spot meter that follows the focus point:

I wish mine did that. I understand the Canon 1D does that. But alas...

ALL problems with automation are user error.

I use auto ISO in manual. That way I pick the SS and aperture. I have the max ISO set to the highest that I think is usable.
Works great.
