The Malay word orangutan means "person of the forest." These long-haired, orangish primates, found only in Sumatra and Borneo, are highly intelligent and are close relatives of humans.

Orangutans exhibit many similarities to human growth and behaviors. They tend to shelter themselves from the rain or the sun with large leafy branches or large leaves. They also engage in tool use in the wild. As for development, the first year is very similar to human infant development.

Sumatran Orangutan

The images shared in this post come from several zoos, EOS bodies and lens combinations. All images were captured in RAW and processed using Adobe Lightroom and Topaz DeNoise v6

Classified in the genus Pongo, orangutans were originally considered to be one species. From 1996, they were divided into two species: the Bornean orangutan (P. pygmaeus, with three subspecies) and the Sumatran orangutan (P. abelii). In November 2017, a third species had been identified, the Tapanuli orangutan (P. tapanuliensis). The ancestors of the Ponginae subfamily split from the main ape line in Africa 16 to 19 million years ago and spread into Asia.

Orangutan

Known for their distinctive red fur, orangutans are the largest arboreal mammal, spending most of their time in trees. Long, powerful arms and grasping hands and feet allow them to move through the branches. These great apes share 96.4% of our genes and are highly intelligent creatures.

Sumatran Orangutan

Bornean and Sumatran orangutans differ a little in appearance and behavior. While both have shaggy reddish fur, Sumatran orangutans have longer facial hair.

Cincinnati Zoo, July 2014

Sumatran Orangutan

Sumatran orangutans are reported to have closer social bonds than their Bornean cousins. Bornean orangutans are more likely to descend from the trees to move around on the ground. Both species have experienced sharp population declines.

Zoo Miami, November 2018

Sumatran Orangutan

Adult male orangutans can weigh up to 200 pounds. Flanged males have prominent cheek pads called flanges and a throat sac used to make loud verbalizations called long calls.

Zoo Tampa, November 2018

Bornean Orangutan

A century ago there were an estimated 230,000 orangutans in total, but the Bornean orangutan is now estimated at about 104,700 (Endangered) and the Sumatran about 7,500 (Critically Endangered). The Tapanuli orangutan is the most endangered of all great apes with no more than 800 individuals in existence

Thank you Dennis, Bill, Ronnie, Irvingite Charles, Bultaco, water falls, Ken, Rob48, speters, dancers! If you can see the troop at the Zoo Tampa, that exhibit is the best with multiple young ones now in 2019 and rather close. outdoors with barriers, and with just a deep moat as a divider.
