I am asking for advice for a travel tripod. I want something that I can pack in my camera bag or my suitcase, so it has to fold up to a small size and be light. I am not concerned with maximum height, but I am concerned with getting as low to the ground as possible. The maximum weight of my camera/lens is 5 pounds. I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it. Suggestions please, from first hand experience, I really don't trust reviews I read, but I do trust my Hogger friends.

I bought a "MeFOTO RoadTrip Air Travel Tripod" on an impulse when it was on a one day sale. It is not the perfect rugged, rock solid camera support I might dream for. It can't be if goals include light and compact. For travel, it's very good. The odd part for me is most of my photography is a part of some sort of travel. That means it became my go to tripod for almost everything.

What can I tell you about it?

I bought the same one, for the same reasons. I generally use it with only three or four of the extensions pulled out and never with the center arm extended. More than adequate for my Nikon DX gear. I'm not sure the five pounds wouldn't be a little too much for it, though. I don't think I'm quite there, even with a longish zoom.

I'm OK with it at 4+ pounds (camera and lens). It's rated for 13!

I always recommend the Sirui T-025x; it's carbon fiber, very light, very compact. The center column can be removed for added stability as well as close to the ground shooting. There are cheaper brands, but Sirui has excellent customer service and warranty; I've gotten replacement parts from them with no issue.

I can also recommend the Sirui VA-5 video head; very small and it takes Arca plates so you can stick a nodal slide on it and with an arca base on your camera you can easily balance it.

The T-025x folds up over the head, so you can't leave the tripod head on it. But for compact travel you wouldn't want to anyway.

First, are you going to travel in a group or on your own. The reason I ask is because if your traveling in a group and they are not photographers, do NOT take a tripod. You will slow up the group. Also, if your going to a foreign country be aware that if you are in a crowded environment shooting with a tripod can be inappropriate in some situations.
I have traveled extensively and the best equipment I take is two point and shoot Sony's.
But, if you are really going to take a travel tripod then this is my suggestion.

A few years ago I needed a travel tripod. After considerable research I decided that the Feisol CT-4442 was light enough (2.3 lbs) and strong enough (55lb load) and given my excellent results with its big brother, the CT3472 it was worth a shot. My experience so far is it is "rock solid" for most closeups and up to a 200mm lens, though I have gotten decent results up to 300mm.

I Have a MeFoto RoadTrip (no AIR) it is light weight and compact for travel. I also bought a short column that allows the tripod to be nearly on the ground. This tripod is quite tall and has a hook to suspend a weighted object (may be your camera bag or a plastic bag filled with gravel or rocks) for extra stability. This object should touch the ground. The tripod is fine for my m4/3 equipment and Ok with my Nikon D7200 as long as the lens is not very large. I think it would be fine with my 55-200 or 55-300mm lenses. The head is a ball head that can be replaced with a more sturdy head if necessary.

I have taken this tripod in checked baggage for air travel. It is very easy to tuck in somewhere.

Absolutely, just because you say so. Care to explain a bit more before you just condemn them? Best of luck.

That's weight under compression, not torsion. The question is whether it will hold a long lens and camera stable on the axis of the tripod head.

I've actually tried out all of my various tripods with camera weight and long lens. I like this little tripod very much for its packability and as long as I don't try to fully extend it, it is reasonably stable. But I can't even imagine shooting a 13 pound camera/lens combo on it at full extension.
