I own a D300 and a D800E considering moving to a smaller/lighter DX camera like a D5600. I Don't believe I am ready for a mirrorless camera Anyone own a D5500/D5600 that could share there performance with me

Easy to use. Excellent IQ. Light. Good low light performance.

Double check compatibility with each lens that you own. I don't believe that the D5600 has an in-body focus motor. If you are coming from a D300, there is a good likelihood that you may have one or more lenses that require a focus motor in the camera. There may be other incompatibilities with some of your older lenses. So check to make sure.

All is true. As a D5500 owner I would add that thanks to the excellent grip it’s easy to hold the camera even with the larger lens. Also, with the touch screen and “i” button I can easily change almost any setting very quickly. Very happy with D5500.

You'll be going from the superior pentaprism viewfinder of the D300 and D800E to the pentamirror viewfinder of the D5600. The glass prism in the D300 and D800E gives a larger, slightly brighter view through the viewfinder.

Pentamirror left, Pentaprism right

I wouldn’t go that low. I upgraded from a canon rebel( low end) to Nikon 7000 and now I have the 810. When I got the 810 what difference, way more blessings to use. Today I wished i used the 300 or 800. Certain settings and certain limitations on the Rebel.....look in to mirror less.....

I have a D5300 which is basically the same as the 5600 excecpt does a touch screen. I don’t think you can go wrong with the 5600. It is easy to use and has excellent features that you would find on more expensive models.

There is no in body focus motor. My one negative on the Nikon 5000 series.

I love my D5500 though. I have had it for two years. I have also had the opportunity to try out some other cameras that I thought would get me to switch from it. Specifically the Sony 6000 series and most recently a Fuji XT-20. I didn’t think the Sony matched the IQ with its kit lenses and I wasn’t willing to spend the money on good Sony glass. I thought the Fuji matched it on IQ and I loved the look and feel of the Fuji as well as the controls. But in the end, the price of Fuji lenses and especially their lack of zoom lenses kept me a D5500 user. If price is a concern, the availability of reasonably priced primes and zooms from Nikon make them hard to match in my opinion. I do also own an Olympus Pen that I love, mainly because I can fit it in my pocket with a pancake lens on it. And I carry a 40-150 zoom in my other pocket when I need to be hands and strap free.

I bought a D5600 for myself then gave this to my wife. She loved the small size, light weight and touch screen compared to her D5100. She always shot great pics with it and now upgraded her camera to a D7500, so her favorite camera (D5600) is now for sale in the UHH Classified. I use a D850 and there always seems to be competition between the two of us as to who takes the best pics. She often won with the D5600!
