I have been shooting pistol matches (USPSA and IDPA) for the last couple of years and have gotten quite a few great shots and have even sold some along the way. There is always downtime during these matches so I will usually look for something interesting to capture. I also use trips to new (to me) ranges to scout locations for portrait shoots in the future.
Here are a couple from "that" folder. I hope you enjoy them.

This is a 9 mm PCC or Pistol Caliber Carbine in an AR build. PCC is a fast growing class in the competitive shooting sports world. They are fun to shoot...both WITH my camera AND on the range!

Very nice series I think it captures the essence of the sport. Our range, Tucson Rifle Club, officially discourages cameras.

The thing I see is the lack of younger shooters entering our competitive shooting sports. Sure the kids come out on the weekends but in 30 minutes they expend two or three hundred rounds of 9mm from their Glock or the same amount from an AR, shooting the hell out of our target backers and not hitting much else.

Then suggest that marksmanship classes be required/strongly encouraged and teach them to hit what they aim at.
And for those that claim they don't need it. Have a couple of "ringers" around to challenge them to a spur of the moment contest. Beat the hell out of them score wise, then offer "I can coach you a bit and help you get a lot better. You seem to have the talent, you just need help with technique."

A friend who owned a gun shop used to do that with complaints "This gun you sold me is no good. I can't hit the target."
Once it was a gun I had on consignment at the shop and I happened to be there when the customer came in to complain. We didn't tell him it had been my gun. Just offered for me to go to the indoor range with him and see if I could help. We went, my friend had called the range owner and told him we were on the way. We were setup with the two end positions with a bit of privacy. The guy shot off a magazine, half didn't hit the life size silhouette at 7 yards. He had learned at the "TV and Movie" shooting school. I took the gun put in a magazine and put all the rounds inside the 9 and 10 ring as fast as I could pull the trigger. (Had approval from the owner to do that once.) Then did a second mag slow fire all in the 10. The owner and his manager were watching. They came up and started in on "You just need some coaching on grip, sight picture etc and you can get that good. Here let my manger show you how - one hour range time free. I packed my stuff and slipped out about that time. About a week later at the shop the owner told us the guy was on the paper in 15 minutes and after 30 had signed up for a combo shooting and self defense class. And after the first session of the class he was staying inside the 8 ring, had caught on to the safety etc and was looking for a good holster and signed up for a class to apply for a carry permit. This was Los Angeles County so his chances of that were slim but he wanted to try.

I don't think a Glock can shoot hundreds of rounds without a malfunction, it's not a Sig

I feel lucky that I get to shoot the events with little or no hassle from the range/match directors. Some of my shots have been used as "instant replay" for a couple DQ's. When I get to a match I always let the match director know I'm there, sign a waiver and such. At the stage and safety briefings I ALWAYS make sure that "if anyone does NOT want photos let me know". It gets a few laughs but some of these guys are law enforcement, former DEA and US Marshal Service so I get it.
My wife competes. That is why I started doing this. We both get to spend the day together and still do our own thing. I've met a lot of really cool people and have made some real friends too.
Here are a couple of competitors.
