This is Wendy from the Three River Avian Center near Sandstone WV. The Red Tail was hit by a car and had a broken wing. They work with veterinarians from around the area (West Virginia) to mend birds of any size. The ones that can be fixed they release. The ones that can't are cared for as long as they live. If they learn to adjust people and have a good nature they use them as PR at festivals and schools.
This bird is being released after it mended. It is called the Statue of Liberty release. She just holds it up and lets it fly. She dislikes throwing the bird up in the air not wanting to cause the bird stress.
They do photography workshops spring and fall to help raise funds at a very reasonable cost BTW. Much less than most workshops.
Very moving, a wonderful story and image.

This is another. She is keeping one of her babies warm. It is a very old and very gentle Screech Owl. I do not remember the age but do remember it is older than they live in the wild. The temperature took a quick drop and she was afraid it would get cold. I have many images of this bird from past years but they thought this was her last photo shoot. Going into retirement.

A fine moment, beautifully captured Rick! I love the apparent eye contact between the two, parting glance. It makes me happy to know this lucky young bird is back out there! Thanks.
Phil
and thank you Wendy!!
Excellent shot and narration, Rick!
Heartwarming. So nice to see good stuff happening, too.
Thanks for this. Very good.
Mike
I needed that. This is something I would dearly love to do. Thanks for posting this heartwarming story and images.
Wonderful! They say some birds recognize people's faces. I bet this one will remember hers! Thanks for posting!
Excellent photos and a great rehab center. We are trying to get together with some friends to visit the Raptor Rehab Center in Huntersville, NC., always enjoy my visits there.

My brother lives on the North/South Carolina border. He told me a couple years ago they had one not to far away. He was trying to entice me into coming down for a visit. While he may exaggerate the distance figure there is probably one in the general area. There are several around the country.
