Canon 90D image download to computer - problems

I purchased the Canon 90D without realizing there were technical requirements with the EOS Utility 3.11.0 for this camera. The info on Canon's website says it requires Windows 10 Version 1607 or later and that upgraded systems won't work.

My system is Version 10.0.17134.

I can download the images using a card reader which doesn't download them in dated groups but just as a long list of CR3 files. I can see them in Digital Photo Professional. But I want to see them in LightRoom Classic (subscription version).

Does anyone know if there's a workaround for downloading directly from the camera or do I have to buy a new computer?

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) probably hasn’t been updated for the 90D just yet. Give them a calendar quarter or two.

Early adopters often see this scenario.

Did you download and install the updated EOS utility? I'm not arguing again Canon's posted requirements, but it seems a bit odd to have a very specific point version of Win10 as a 'requirement'. I spent most of yesterday getting / forcing one of my laptops to the current Oct 2019 Win10 update. Do you know why your computer isn't updated?

Adobe will update their software when the new camera has sold enough copies to make the update feasible.

That camera is shown as being supported in Lightroom.

The last time I did a full windows upgrade I had to find it via the update assistant. This might help, but I'm no expert in anything but following instructions.

Why are you not using the Lightroom Classic Import features that copy files from card to computer while it is cataloging the images?

In other words, what do you need the other stuff for when Lightroom Classic can do it?

Because Lightroom Classic isn't recognizing the files that I downloaded via the card reader. LightRoom can't see the individual CR3 files. When I click Import, it only sees files in the Pictures file that appear under dated groupings. It isn't seeing the individual images from the card reader.

Adobe's site says they support EOS 90D CR3 files. You said the subscription version. Is this software up to date at v8.4?

The import module in Lightroom can read the files directly from your camera or card and you choose where to put them and whether you want them as is or converted to dng. https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/how-to/import-photos.html

I'm really confused. If you've got the right, updated Lightroom Classic, it should see the files on the card! If you are using Lightroom for the file transfer to you have the little box checked to tell it to look in subfolders?

Perhaps I better tell you how I usually handle downloads. I download using a Canon Utility installed on my computer. Then, when I want to process the raw images, I open Lightroom and Import them from the Pictures folder. I always assumed that's what everyone does. So, do you think you could send me the steps you use to get them directly off the camera to Lightroom. I am clearly not a techie!

However you 'see' the camera or camera card with the Canon Utility to copy the images, just replace the Canon Utility with the Import w/ copy action in LR. Just specify the 'target' where you want LR to copy those files from the camera card. BTW, there's nothing 'wrong' about your current approach. I do exactly the same: copy from camera to computer. Cull on the computer. Import what's left into LR for processing.

Did you try downloading the Canon Utility and see if it does in fact operate on your Win10 computer?

Did you check your version number in LR Classic?

I spent a few hours today updating Windows 10. I'm now on LightRoom and have clicked Import and entered From Canon EOS 90D and it is saying No Photos Found.

As a subscriber, you always have the free option of opening a chat with Adobe for help. Download the updated Canon Utility is free too.

So basics first, make sure you check for updates to Lightroom, in the help menu. Second if you are connecting with a cable to the camera make sure the camera is turned on and use 'select source' to pick it. Sometimes you have to cancel the import and redo it after turning the camera on before it recognizes the camera. If you take the card out of the camera and use a card reader, select the card as the source. Should work, but Adobe chat via the help menu is very helpful. In your help menu or bottom right here, click the chat icon. https://helpx.adobe.com/support/lightroom-cc.html
