I ordered this lens at the end of March hopping to have it for baseball season now I'm hopping to have by next baseball season. I rented it last weekend for some youth football games. I used it on my D500 and I must say I struggled to keep things in frame the tight angle of view on my crop sensor body had me hunting for the ball. I'd like to hear from those of you have this setup. Thanks for looking and comments are encouraged. All shot wide open.
Looks good to me, but I'm staying with the 200-500! Nice to have a decent prime though!

More great work Nikon. Still a little shadow and highlights tweak. Great work on the crop and comp. Keep it up. I love my 200-500mm F/5.6. It does take a bit of practice to get used to the weight, focusing, where you need to be to get focused and in the frame what you want. I am still working on it, but haven't been out with it that much yet. Not a night or real overcast lens but I knew that when I purchased a month or so ago. As long as you know its drawbacks when you purchase I think you will love it. Hopefully Jules will chime in. He has one and shoots with the D500 also and he has more time with it. You can take what he says to the bank! These were really good. Keep posting. Thanks
Tom

Mr. Nikon:
I do not have this lens. I imagine with a D500 the reach is amazing if that's what your looking for. I like many others here use the 200-500 5.6 and that coupled with the D500 is still strong for football and soccer. But for shorter shots like sideline stuff, I use my 700-200 2.8. I also have the 80-400 and that works well for medium shots.
Good luck.
Jules
Read about some of the great photographers from the past who shot with equipment that was so far in the past that we would laugh. Example 4x5 speed graphics and they took great photos of sports with one shot at a time changing sheet film. The key is to know the game and anticipate where the shot will be and let it come to you not try chasing it all around. You might guess wrong sometimes and miss something but it is a long and tried true method.

Well said Chris. I actually used my dad's Speed Graphic and Roliflex shooting sports. Talk about heavy with the Speed Graphic.
