It's really interesting how guns and cameras use the same terms so often. People are always shooting pictures but not taking pictures. Susan Sontag talks about this in her essay "On Photography". I wonder how this terminology started? Most people take pictures to create beauty while people shoot guns to destroy. Any ideas out there?

You can understand why when you see the animated original Elmer...

He tried to be a photographer and became a gun totting guy in revenge against the yet ill defined bunny....

Life is too short to not shoot with Canon.

Not sure but my recent post titled “Deer Season” generated some discussion on shooting and hunting. Wildlife photography seems to have parallels to hunting but the subject survives when shot.

I find it regrettable that guns and cameras often use the same terms. For me, a camera is not an instrument for causing harm or destruction, or to use to threaten with violence. Rather, it's a tool I use for artistic expression and capturing interesting or important moments. When I take a picture of an animal or person, I don't pretend I'm killing the subject... although I think some photographers do exactly that.

So, do you go on a photo capture/take instead of a photo shoot?

I generally don't talk to my camera, I just remain silent and do my thing.

I think a similar thing is happening here in the Attic...

I think it is to do with 'aiming' at something.
Footballers 'shoot' at the goal. You give things 'your best shot'.
Guns are a modern invention....we had slingshots and shot arrows. To suggest it is all about guns is a stretch. Maybe because there was a movement to encourage photography over trophy hunting.

English - as so many people point out....is a funny thing. The choice of a word in a sentence can totally alter it's sense of meaning. You wouldn't want to go out with a broad broad when a slim lady is available. In Norfolk a Broad is a stretch of water! Are we always calm when we compose or whistling a tune?

have fun
