To anyone who may have tried to do so:

I’m wondering if the Backlight 36L fits in a regional jet (CRJ-700) overhead bin?

I would recommend contacting the carrier and ask them directly what measurements are allowed. Asking here might provide you with feedback that is incorrect.

Your outer dimensions for that bag is:

13.78 x 22.44 x 10.24"

Sagely advice, but airline dimensions are misleading, perhaps intentionally so. Thus a request to determine if anyone has been successful.

Airlines are trying to standardize on 22x14x9. My bag is 10 years old, so slightly larger. I've not been kicked off yet.

Check the airline specs for the plane that you will be on. They usually post the overhead bin dimensions.

I was just on regional jet flight to Cody WY. The normal carry on rules do not apply based on the plane. The bins are very small. They gate check most everything except the personal items. Put on a cart when you get on and you pick it up when you get off, all outside the terminal or in the jetway.
You have to ask the airline you are flying. Frankly not a big deal even though the case had a lot of expensive gear. You can watch out the window as they put them on last and take them off first. I lock mine just to make sure they can't inadvertently open the latches and spill things.

Be aware not just size but weight to consider please contact airline. Look at airline website and hopefully will have all the sizing requirements.

Regional jet being the key word here.

As has been stated many times - check with your airline. Each airline has its own policy, not only based on the aircraft to be flown, but for the class of ticket you have purchased. (ie - United "basic economy" *nothing* is carry on except for one personal item) AND, checking by aircraft used is almost useless - what if you check about the CRJ700 and they decide to use a 747 on that run?

My business as a travel consultant and experience over many years is that the airlines do not go by their own rules and it depends on the gate agents, the load of the plane as they can take and gate check a perfectly sized bag if they are running full at anytime, equipment can change and regional jets the overhead bins are too small for anything 22 inches. I carry a cloth shopping bag and remove my laptop and camera and carry it onboard with me and jetway check my rollerboard bag living in a city with lots of regional jets. I have had the airlines take my legal size carry on at the gate so many times at LAX I went and purchased a smaller one as for work I always have my camera and laptop in that rollerboard versus carrying the weight on my shoulder. I often wear a safari type jacket with lots of pockets even a zippered pocket in the back that my netbook fits in. This comes in handy overseas with carry on weight limits of 7 kilos and only 1 item as I fill the pockets with extras I would usually have in the carry on.
Use the Sony RX10 III for those travels which I am very happy with its quality and size and weight while traveling.
