First 4 shots are at 20,000 ISO. The last is in ideal conditions. If you shoot sports enough you will see conditions that can exceed your gear's abilities. I have been trading up every year with my main body to get where I am right now. Having the right tool for the job is only half of the equation. I started sports on this ridiculously dark football field 10 years ago. I thrive in low light conditions. Day games are a blessing.
Last week I took a hit on the sidelines of a college game. I thought it was minor. But my 300 needed micro focusing for the first time in 10 years this week. +4 off, I am close. Might tweak it some this week.

Excellent work! According to the EXIF, that was a Canon 1Dx doing what it does best, and I’m guessing maybe a 300 f2.8L?

Yep, 1DX and an older 300 Non IS F 2.8. It is built like a tank. I have been shooting this field for years with a 5Diii and a 1D mark iv. The 1DX really cuts down on my post processing.

Shows what experience and talent can deliver with the right equipment. Nighttime sports is a genre’ that really pushes the equipment to the limits. My son recently bought the same 300 f2.8L non IS lens for the same application. It is a beast, and a very capable one.

WOW!!! Shot at 20,000 ISO. Amazing is all I can say. I wish my D800 or D810 could do that well at higher ISO. Did you have to do much post work on these. Please post more. Thanks

Tom

Quality equipment knows few limitations. 10 years from now you will still be able to shoot that gear. I dragged your lens' bigger bro, EF 500mm f/4.5 (non IS) around Rocky Mt. NP 2 weeks ago and it performed flawlessly. I set the 1-Dx ISO to Auto and took whatever it offered, it also performed flawlessly. In 7 days of shooting the 4 of us only saw 2 Nikon shooters, a few Sony's, and the rest had 1-Dx or version II. We met a couple shooting video, and both were using 1-Dx. Felt as though we were in a Canon commercial. I've never seen numbers like that before, almost everyone was lugging a Canon flagship around mated with a big-white telephoto. It was an experience I will gladly do-over, all my long lenses, perfect weather conditions, great shooting partners, and a 15-point elk bull that knew how to run the meadow! IncrediBull is massive and 15 points make him very dangerous. Best trip ever.

Tom here is one of the original shots straight out of the camera. If you push the exposure up a bit so you have to bring it down in post. You will bring out alot of the detail without adding noise. And second get as tight of a shot as you can so you won't have to make a big crop. The 1DX is a beast for sure. I have learned some settings in camera with my 5Diii that helps reduce noise and a good sharp prime lens makes a difference. They go against the ways everyone preaches. Transferred to the 1DX it really makes a difference.

I am impressed, no I really am. 20,000 iso this is very very good.
No cropping and if so, very little, I see no noise at all.

Hi Jules,

As always Your Photos are Awesome.

With My Nikon D3s I can do okay with ISO up to 8,000, using Lightroom Luminance to help me reduce the noise. Those photos are outstanding with the Higher ISO.

May I ask if or what You use in process to assist with high ISO noise reduction??

I have "Neat Image" I have attempted to use on a couple of photos I really wanted for special use, with little success. (Sure Operator error on my part.)

Thanks for sharing your photos, and expertise I always learn something.

Hi Jules, br br As always Your Photos are Awesome... (show quote)

Tom I don't use a noise reduction that much, but when I do it's called Noiseware. It's free and does a pretty decent job.
Be well,
Jules
