Haven't posted over here in awhile. Now that nesting season is over and we haven't seen the first arrivals of the over wintering birds here in Florida I thought I would try a little macro Hand held stacking. This one is shot at F/9 about 25 photos deep of a live female Phidippus mystaceus. I haven't stack but a couple of times in the last few years, so the last few days I've been practicing. I've posted a half dozen more different shots over on the macro forum page if you want to check them out..

I let the D850 sit this one out, using the D7200 with a Nikon 105mm lens. My poor Tokina 100mm is just about worn out. I bought this new/used lens for the D850. When I use my trusted Tokina I just get to much dust onto my sensor. I'll probably buy another one, it's lighter and a hair sharper than the nikon. It extends when focusing and I was use to the working distance.. The lighter the set up the better for stacking. My go to camera was the D600, but it's broken at the moment. Nothing beats a full frame for resolution when stacking. I could probably buy another one cheaper than fix the one I have.. The D850 is just to heavy with the lens, extension tubes, and flash for hand held stacks..

Would you mind posting a couple of the individual images you used for this? Im trying to get a netter understanding of the process in general. I think I get it.
Cool picture

I love these hairy critters! Very eye-catching (no pun intended) capture, Martin.

Mr. Fisher,
I am incredulous that this was done hand-held. How do you maintain alignment? Also, was this cutie just taken out of the freezer? How did you stop it from moving? Also, what stacking program did you use?
Thanks,

Zerene Stacking software, You just have to wait for the spider to settle in and pause for a moment. Sometimes you get about 20 seconds or so to capture your stack. Thousands of shots has trained my hands and eye coordination. I now shoot with both eyes open for most of the stack looking through the view finder. You just have to see the slices of focus as they come into view and fire away. But you have to stay on a forward motion coarse. Flash freezes the camera movement/shake and Zerene does a good job of aligning the shots. It's all hands on practicing, you can't talk you way through this........
P.S. No, not taken out of freezer, alive and well all nice and warm.. The freezer trick does Not work anyway. I tried once before several years ago, as soon as the subject hits warmer air their eyes bead up with condensation.

Can you program your camera to advance the focus automatically and fire away on continuous or are you manually refocusing and pressing a release for each shot?
